12 Undocumented Tricks for Google Buzz
So. Google just recently announced Google Buzz. I’m not sure about you, but I didn’t see this coming. Sure, Google was bound to start a social network of some sort at some time; but, I didn’t think it’d be this soon!
After spending a few hours on Google Buzz, we’re proud to present you with 12 simple tricks to help give you a better Buzz. Before you start drinking the Google juice, though, make sure you choose a designated driver! (Ya, I know. Bad joke.)
Enough talk. Here are your tricks:
Updated: More Google Buzz Tips, Resources, Extensions, and Icons to Keep You Buzzed.
1. Formatting

Buzz doesn’t have any WYSIWYG editor built in, but it does allow some basic formatting. Currently, we’ve discovered three different formatting options: bold, italic, and strike-through. If you find any more, please place them in the comments.
To make something bold, simply enclosing it with asterisks (*) Ex: “This is *bold*!” will become “This is bold!” In the same way, if you’d like to italicize something use the underscore (_). Ex: “This is _very important_” becomes “This is very important.” (Be careful, though, because on IRC chats, the underscore is reserved for underlining and italic is actually “/”.)
Edit: We mentioned strike-through, but didn’t say how to do it! Strike-through works in the same way, but with the dash (-). Ex: “I am really -sad- happy” becomes “I am really sad happy”. Thanks for pointing this out, Nathan!
Sometimes you want to display the asterisks without formatting, so how do we do that? Simply make sure you have the symbol surrounded by spaces. Ex: “This is _ not italic _ and this is * not bold * and now I am – still – happy.”
2. Post from SMS
Buzz allows you to submit posts by sending email to [email protected] (Your phone must be setup to send email from your Buzz-enabled Gmail account, though.) You can even send attachments like images. I’m not quite sure about other attachments though. If you find some hidden attachment functionality, please let us know in the comments!
Note that the email functionality only takes the subject and the attachments. The body of the email is completely ignored (Seriously Google, why?).
For more about posting via Email, check out How to Post Messages and Photos to Google Buzz via Email.
3. Hide/Remove Google Buzz Updates from your email.

Buzz is setup so you can easily notify someone of a status you think they should see using the @reply functionality. A buzz will show up in your inbox if someone “@replies” you. If you don’t want to receive any buzz in your Gmail inbox or the “Mute” button just isn’t doing enough for you, you can use Gmail’s filter functionality to direct the Buzz elsewhere. The Gmail query for this filter is label:buzz or is:buzz.
There’s two things you can do here: (1) have buzz alerts skip the inbox and you never have to see them again (seen in the screenshot above), or (2) direct all the buzz notifications into a special label (which is what I’m doing) so that you still get notified when your friends want to show you something, but it’s out of your inbox which, for some, is a “working” place.
Thanks LifeHackers for this trick.
4. Turn OFF Buzz:

Sometimes, you need to leave the world outside. Just look for the small “turn off buzz” link at the bottom of your Gmail window (right before the copyright line).
5. Indicate and notify the commenter you’re replying to

Let’s say you want to reply to a commenter in your buzz post. You probably want to accomplish two things: (1) identify the commenter and (2) notify them. The @reply function gives us this option, even when users are not in your contact list, but it can be tricky because you have to know their email address.
Here goes: Click the button to start writing your comment. Hover over the user’s name to see the link. You should see their username at the end of the URL, right before “#buzz” (If you see a bunch of numbers, this unfortunately won’t work because they’re hiding their username). Start typing out their username and follow it with “@gmail.com”. Type out your reply and post it. If you typed it correctly, the “@username[email protected]” should morph into their name, linked to their profile. Ex: “@[email protected]” will change to “Nathan Brauer“. And the user will be notified of the new comment.
6. Access Buzz before it’s enabled for your account
If Google hasn’t enabled buzz for your account yet, you can get a sneak peak by turning on Multiple Inboxes in Gmail Labs and set is:buzz in one of the empty panes. Bam! Now you’re buzzed! Sorry this doesn’t work for Google Apps yet, but I’d assume that once they start to add it to Apps, you will be the first to know!
Thanks to Waglo for this trick.
(Also, Buzz on mobile devises is enabled for everyone, so you can spoof your user-agent so you can access it directly on the computer too.)
7. Retwee…err…Rebuzz?

While there is no “retweet” function for Buzz, you can simply copy the Public URL which is linked to in the time/date of the post and submit it in a new status update.
It’s worth noting that if the email method (mentioned above) accepted the body of the email as well, you’d be able to simply click the “Email” button at the bottom of the buzz post and email it to [email protected] It even includes its Public URL and all the current comments of the post.
8. Geolocation

If you post from your location-aware phone, your location will automatically be added to your Buzz post. Access Buzz on your mobile phone via http://buzz.google.com
9. Buzz Extension for Firefox

Buzz it! is an extension for Firefox that will make a buzz status update via Gmail with the link and title of the webpage you are viewing.
You can install this Firefox extension here.
10. Extensions for Google Chrome
There are currently two extensions available for Chrome and both have completely different functionality. Also, both of these extensions require that you set up Google Readerto make it work, and connect Reader to Buzz.
Buzzer

Buzzer is a Chrome Extension which allows you to make updates to Google Buzz from Chrome. For it to work, you need to set up Google Reader and connect Reader to Buzz. This is currently the only Chrome extension which allows you to post to Buzz.
Chrome Buzz

Using Chrome Buzz, you can read your buzz without opening a new tab. Unfortunately, though, you can’t post or comment on anything.
11. Search Buzz
Want to find posts you’ve commented on? Click the “Buzz” tab and type “commenter:[email protected]” into the search field and click “Search Buzz” (obviously, change “youremail” to …well, your email).
Want to see only pictures, videos, or links? Type has:image, has:video, or has:link in the same field.
12. Add a “Buzz it” widget to your blog

Have a blog? Increase your traffic by adding a simple Buzz widget. In your blog’s theme, simply use the following URL (replace the appropriate data):
<a href="http://www.google.com/reader/link?url=[YOUR POST'S URL HERE]&title=[YOUR POST'S TITLE HERE]&snippet=[YOUR POST'S DESCRIPTION HERE]&srcURL=[YOUR BLOG'S URL HERE]&srcTitle=[YOUR BLOG'S NAME HERE]"><img src="buzz-icon.png"/> Buzz it!</a>
Make sure to upload this image to your server as well:
Go on, try it out:
Buzz it!
After you post it, you’ll be redirected back to the post with the “close=1” anchor appended to the URL allowing you to direct the user right back to where they clicked the link!
Know any more?

Thank you so much! I was asking most of these questions while trying Buzz out yesterday.
Very simple but useful: the “g-b” shortcut goes to Buzz the same way “g-i” goes to inbox. And, “tab-enter” works to submit a buzz.

And… the “j/k” shortcuts work.

Nice tips, I wonder if anyone is working on a google client where I can manage my Reader, Email, Buzz, and all the other useful google apps I use daily. You know, kind of like a tweetdeck for google, GooDeck or something! I am also following you now Nathan.. but not in a stalker kinda way, like you don’t have to look behind you or anything.
I use iGoogle to manage all of my apps in one place for Google. I am sure Buzz will be available to add soon:)
Jamie
haha. Thanks Chris.
I think that’s what Google is going for, though. You can have your Reader sync with Buzz and Buzz shows up in your Email when it’s important — all in one place with Gmail.
I think Chrome OS will be the perfect solution for what you’re looking for though.
Hey here’s another trick I found from here:
http://www.google.com/buzz/113506941426753247014/fV5A9Z6xrM1/How-To-Bring-Your-Google-Buzz-Updates-to-Twitter
The trick:
To share items from Buzz to Twitter:
(1) Go to http://reader2twitter.appspot.com/buzz
(2) Connect it to your Twitter account
(3) Add your Google Profile Number ID
(4) Make sure “Sync” is On and hit Submit
http://blog.louisgray.com/2010/02/how-to-bring-your-google-buzz-entries.html
Something that Seesmic just notified me about is: if you use ping.fm to update your social networks and have included Google Talk it will automatically update Buzz for you.
Used it early today and it works!
Jamie
Thanks for the tip Jamie!
I saw Loic testing it out on his Buzz account earlier today, too.
So, if someone wants to update their Buzz, they can also do it directly from their Google Talk/Chat status. All you have to do is enable “Google chat status” as one of your “connected sites” and it does it instantly.
nice post

Good Post .
But seems like Buzz is inspired more or less from Twitter ?
I would say that it’s inspired from all of them put together.

Hey Lam, its very nice post and nice tips too. When i started using Buzz, I asked myself that ‘when it is all same like twitter then what shall I use : twitter or buzz?’ and I am still searching the answer, but somewhere, sometimes i find twitter is better then buzz. But i would like to receive some nice suggestions, so that i can clear myself about using twitter and buzz. Thank you.
.-= Yagnesh Ahir´s last blog ..Mental Walls. (Part 2) =-.
Honestly, I found that Buzz is not different to Twitter at all. Maybe Google will give us some different features in next versions. The thing I hate most with Buzz is I gotta login to Gmail. For what? I’m using mail client, so why I have to login to Gmail? (just in individual opinion)
I wish once day we can combine Twitter and Buzz together. That would be worth for us to be Tweet-Buzz addicts 😀

You can use different search tricks like this:
from:{profilename} as in from:siegfried.hirsch (me)
or you can use the source of the posting like this:
source:mobile to search only mobile buzzes or even
source:twitter for all buzzes via twitter.
And of course you can use your own hashtags, that you can use to favorite postings in the comments. For example you can write #SiegfriedFav in a comment and afterwards you can search for it.

You mention the strike-through formatting ability above but didn’t detail how it’s done. I’m sure you know already, but for others, just place a dash mark immediately before and after any text phrase that you want to appear with the strike-through.

One question, the label filter is:buzz or label:buzz. I have the impression that it does not only skip the inbox, it just shows no notifications at all even next to the Buzz label. Am I righ ?
I use a simple subject contains : “buzz from” filter> skip inbox
The filter won’t affect the notifications from the official Buzz tab. is/label:buzz only pulls up “buzzes” which have become notifications in your email.
Nice hints, thanks!

Can images be posted using mobile devices? I can’t see how yet.
I’m not sure, but you can attach images to an email and send them to [email protected] (must be sent from your gmail address though)
Uh, just a point about the OP: email is not SMS. You cannot SMS into Buzz as far as I am aware.
You are correct in that there is no official SMS setup for Google Buzz. But some mobile services give you the ability to email via SMS. And if you can setup your SMS emails to come from your @gmail account, then it’ll work

Gmail could do with a ‘search buzz’ button next to the ‘search email/web’ buttons – why should one have to go to the buzz ‘tab’ just to search it. Maybe this can be done with a GM script; I’ve actually Firefox-keyword-bookmarked Buzz search (https://mail.google.com/mail/#buzz/search/%s) to search buzz from my address bar.
I wish it were possible to ‘star’ buzzes, get a feed for them too- so I can bookmark them and pull them into my rss reader for further reading.
OT- am I the only one who uses j/k keyboard shortcuts when I think n/p should be used – same effect I just can’t seem to do it properly!
Also, the good thing about Twitter is the placement of the keyboard focus upon loading the page: it’s in the update entry box. With Gmail it’s ‘in’ the inbox; Buzz it’s the same- on the first Buzz. To update you have to click in the posting box to post. For me using keyboard shortcuts I cannot work out how to tab/shortcut to the entry box. Any ideas?
I think Buzz could do with a separate ‘compose’ window/url which can be bookmarked like Gmail’s compose – I can then Buzz quickly without having to wait for Gmail/Buzz to load fully and click the post box.
OT: Facebook now loads way way faster than Gmail/Buzz – with images and links etc. Speed is also key.
When (not an if) Facebook open up their walled garden’s door via PubSubHubbub things are going to get very interesting.
Re-buzzing for me does not work – that is, copying the link of a buzz into a new buzzby myself simply adds ths link, not pulling any text/images etc. Bleh
Ya, it’s not a perfect solution, but it’ll at least alert your followers to that specific buzz.

Is there any way to get a
kind of thing in a google buzz?
I am going with a complete google buzz oriented web site, ie, all my blog posts or web sites are actually google buzzes. Often I will do a post where I want to quote someone’s text from a post or a web site, and then comment on it below. with my older WordPress or Drupal this was fine, but I lost that ability in the google buzz items. I did see from your post you can do something like;
*Bobby Said…*
_this is what bobby said_
But that is very limited, and you cannot include entire paragraphs, or more precisely multiple paragraphs as italic items.
Any suggestions on how to deal with the “wanting to include quoted material in a buzz” suggestions would be very appreciated
Sorry, in that last post what showed up as
… was a block quote, so without the tags, hopefully you will get my meaning, I am trying to do a;;
