Best Theme By Your Friends At BloggingExperiment.com
Notice as of Novermber 5th, 2012: the Best theme has recently been internationalized by Froozeify. This feature has been frequently requested, so we are very grateful for this addition to help out some of our users. That being said, we do not add third-party code to our master branch of the Best theme for various reasons, and we have not had the opportunity to review this version of the theme personally. Thus, we are not responsible nor will we support any issues that might arise from using this version (just covering ourselves on the litigious front).
All that legal junk aside, we’re thankful to Froozeify and his contribution to the WordPress community. You are a gentleman and a scholar!
Believe it or not our Best WordPress Theme is FREE. Really. We here at BloggingExperiment.com are really giving away a free responsive WordPress theme called Best to all our friends out there.
Best incorporates a lot of the latest design trends as far as WordPress themes go – big typography, clean, minimalist layout, and fully responsive design. It is definitely current and certainly not lacking in the essentials that make a good, solid WordPress theme.
Best is built and tested on HTML5 using the latest CSS3 technique so you can be assured that it is not going to go out of date really soon. It’s got a lot of flexibility and power. You can choose your own layout style or a specific page template, enable or disable certain areas of the theme, pick your color scheme, upload your own logo, use shortcodes to customize the basic design and so much more. It’s pretty much everything you’d get from a premium theme except you pay zero pennies for all those features. Not bad for something that’s free, right? And if you haven’t noticed, take a look around our site – this theme is what we are proudly using right now.

- 3 Page Templates
- Multiple menus
- Multiple page layout options
- Theme options (header/logo uploader, options for color, site background, link colors, footer options, featured content options)

Super pumped to put this theme to use as I build up my projects over the next few months.
I did have one trouble shoot I had to figure out on my own as it is hard to search for “Help with the best wordpress theme” since best is so SEO heavy.
Anyway – I didn’t realize I need to build a “home” page and a “blog” page and then set the Reading setting to use a static home page and blog page.
Is this a normal feature with custom themes? I was lost for about an hour before I thought to try that. It just seemed very uncommon and I was having a hard time getting the home page to match the style in the demo.
Thanks. Hope this helps any onlookers.
Hey Julian,
Glad to hear you’re enjoying the theme, and I hope it will help you out in any projects you’re working on for yourself or potential clients!
With regards to setting up the “home” page and the “blog” page, I completely understand how this can be a little confusing as every theme is setup differently. As you may know, by default WordPress sets your site’s “home” page to whatever the index.php file is. For the vast majority of themes, this is the standard template used to output blog posts. As WordPress has migrated from a simple blogging platform to a more robust content management system, a lot of users prefer to utilize a “static” homepage for their website to make it appear more like a standard website than a blog (switching this default setting can be done underneath “Appearance > Reading” for any users who are unsure).
The “home” page design included with the Best theme is a special page template with a predefined layout and functionality geared to meet the needs of users who require a static homepage instead of a traditional blog page. Using special page templates for various needs like a home or portfolio page design is a very common practice and is outlined in WordPress’ documentation. Underneath Point 1 for “Creating a Static Front Page” you’ll find the following:
As the nature of how these page templates function varies, you’ll need to make sure you consult the documentation provided with any theme. Some page templates might be very simple and only make use of the main content editor and title from the backend, or be highly customized with special widget areas other features. Best’s “home” template is made up of many widgetized areas and a custom slider to give users plenty of flexibility in crafting a homepage that suits their needs. Documentation on how Best’s homepage is setup can be found here.
I do hope this helps if you still have any questions on how to setup the theme, and hope that this might assist any other users that also have questions on how to get the theme setup. If anything else happens to come up, please don’t hesitate to let us know so that we can get you moving along as quickly as possible!
Thanks for the feedback, Julian!
Hey Kyle,
I enjoy your theme and I try to play with the code to change the style. After changing the background color I see in Firebug css files called: wordpress/ # 2, wordpress/ # 3, wordpress/ # 4. With Firebug I can change this code but I cannot find these files in the directory in Filezilla or in the editor in WordPress. I need to change this code so can you tell me how?
Thanks!
Hey Barbara,
Thanks for trying out Best on your site! I’m not entirely sure what’s showing up in your Firebug, but all of the styles for the theme can be located in the
style.css
file. There aren’t any additional styles other than that, so I’m not entirely sure what that could be.Thanks!
Great theme can’t wait to check it out. I am always looking for new and great themes.
Thanks, Hillary! Let us know if you have any questions.
Thanks Kyle I have really loved working with your theme. It was easy to set up and configure just the way I wanted it. Awesome theme.
I stumbled onto this theme by accident. I was looking for custom homepage example code for page animations, a nice slider or some fancy ajax loading. Basically looking for some inspiration. When I seen this I knew a client of mine would love it so I set it up for them and in the process fell in love with it myself.
This is exactly the kind of theme that I would make (as a web dev blogging fanatic type) to keep all to myself. There’s good and bad with that – the good: I don’t have to hand craft this theme myself. The bad: I have to share the theme with other people haha!
The layout works extremely well, I like that the homepage shows the featured thumbnails specified in the post but also defaults to an easily changable .jpg in the theme folder. The slider is what initially caught my eye and I like the way it’s wired into the WP dash – with it’s own top level menu entry, using the standard editor to fill the text of the slide and uploading the actual slide pic as the featured image. I think it’s also a good way to go allowing custom image, text and link seporately so you can link to a specific place on your own site or a different domain entirely. I cant praise this theme highly enough.
Kudos on this, its simple enough to set-it and forget it for less WordPress savy folks but also robust enough to handle the intensive modifications that a self confessed wordpessaholic developer like myself can throw at it.
Started off uploading and configuring this for a client, ended up having it for my own personal site and even wired up some custom portfolio functionality to show off my work.
Thanks for this, it’s awesome!
Thank-you for your very kind words, William. I look forward to passing this on to the people who need to hear it. There will be an update to Best sometime in the next couple of weeks, so stay tuned to the Best Theme page for the latest. We look forward to seeing you back at BloggingExperiment.com soon!
I forgot to mention the best bit about it – how responsive it is. I use my site on my dev machine (super high res), my laptop, my tablet, phone, and ipod. Works brilliant on all of them and the header adspot (when modified slightly to accomodate the adsense code) fits a nice mobile sized adsense unit that flows with the content and is visable on all the devices I tested it on.
Actually as a future feature maybe make the header spot accomodate adsense – it currently strips all the tags from the input during sanitization or something. Hotfix is to just make a child theme and replace the code for the header ad spot in header.php with the adsense code directly but supporting direct copy/paste from the adsense site would be handy.
Thanks again for the theme, it really is awesome.
William,
Thanks again for your kind remarks. We always appreciate feedback of any kind, but it’s definitely nice to hear some praises every now and again!
With regards to your comment about the header ad spot, you are absolutely correct in the fact that it sanitizes input data upon saving your options in the admin panel. As I’m sure you know, we do this as a security measure to keep users from accidentally or unknowingly running malicious scripts in the browser. While it would be great to accommodate this feature for certain pieces of code like AdSense, we have intentionally chosen to leave the sanitization in place for the sake of the end user who might not have as much experience with development matters. It seems like you know your way around a code editor though, so I would definitely recommend moving forward with a child theme as you stated and move forward with that.
Keep us informed about any features you would like to see in the future as Best is in continual development. We’re hoping to get v1.1 out this weekend with a slimmed down stylesheet and some added features. Stay tuned to the site for more info!
I do indeed know my way around the code and I fully understand that your everyday user may not be able to distinguish good scripting from malicious so I suppose that’s a nifty wee security feature
Also I noticed that the tags I entered into my previous comment were stripped during posting but at least it still made sense without them lol
Found a little bug in the theme for you to sort in 1.1, you probably already know but when no comments are on a post this appears:
No Comments”>No Comments
It was a super easy fix, I’m sure you don’t need me to explain how :p
I’m following the dev of this theme closely so expect me to keep popping my head out and making a nuisence of myself whenever I can lol
I’m looking forward to v1.1, maybe I’ll even submit some code just so I can get my name in the credits 😉 I wish I was the one who made this theme at least if I get in the credits I can pretend it was me who made it lol
Would you mind providing an example of where you’re seeing the “no comments” bug? I took a look through the demo we have setup as it has a post with no comments on it and can’t seem to locate what you’re referencing, but I’d love to know what it is exactly so we can address it with the next release.
If you have some thoughts for a feature you’d like to see with the theme and feel like coding it yourself for review let us know. If we feel like it adds a great deal of benefit to the end user and is up to our quality standards we’ll merge it with the official release and find a way to get you some credits.
Maybe I won’t tell you where it is or how to fix it… nah I’m kidding. You can see the bug on the homepage and on posts on the site I’ve put into the website field of this comment.
I completely forgot to mention that the bug appears to be a confilct with the plugin: “Disqus” and as far as I can see it’s the most common alternatve comments plugin for WordPress, lots of people use it so it’d be a good idea for this theme to support it 😀 Actually I’m pretty sure it’d happen when using any alternitive comment system but I haven’t double checked that.
Initially I just done a function_exists (‘dsq_is_installed’) to correct it but that was only a fix for Disqus so then I thought about it a little more and realised that there had to be a proper way to fix it. I don’t have the code I used to fix it but basically your theme was missing the “comments_template” tag. Disqus hooks into it to remove the default commening system, I’m assuming other plugins do the same too.
You should be able to fix it with that info but if you can’t I’ll pastebin my replaement code for you tomorrow.
It’s getting close to the weekend, any updates on the v1.1 release schedule, or any of the new features you mentioned?
William,
v1.1 is now available! To see the release notes, make sure to check out the newly added changelog directly above the “Related Articles” section.
In regards to your comment bug, I don’t believe it was mentioned that you were using Disqus, but we greatly appreciate this as it helps us to narrow down any issues. Since Disqus is a widely used commenting system, we’ll look into this issue further and have something ironed out for v1.2. If you have a solution that you think works well for this particular issue, feel free to send it in for review. If not, you can rest assured that we’re on the case!
Thanks again for all your help thus far, William!
Hi. Love the theme…I’m a newbie so I’m just trying to figure things out. Is it possible to have the home page slider on the blog page?
I did not want to use a static home page, my site is going to be a blog, yet I’d love to use the slider and the featured content bar on a post/blog page. I’ve got the featured content bar on my post/blog home page but can’t figure out how to get the slider there. Hope I made sense!
Thanks again!
Hey Jo,
Thanks for writing in! Hopefully we can help provide some clarity on how the theme is setup.
As the Best theme currently stands, the slider is only available for use on the static homepage; however, we’ve received quite a bit of interest in having it available on the blog as well so we’re going to work on adding it to that page sometime in the near future. We’re hoping to have v1.1 out sometime this weekend with some performance improvements and added features. Stay tuned to the site to see if the slider makes the cut…if not we’ll definitely work to include it in a future release.
Let us know if we can help you with anything else!
Wow! Thanks for such a swift reply! I really, really love the theme so even if it doesn’t make the cut I’m going to try to get it customized the way I’d like and use it
I have to say that would be a great feature to be able to use that slider on the blog page without having to go for plug-ins 😉
Thanks again for taking the time to reply! Can’t wait now for the new version and some new features!
No problem, Jo. If you have any further questions feel free to pop in anytime!
Also, if you end up using the theme on any of your websites, let us know as we’re always interested to see what others are doing with the Best theme.
I was just wondering what steps one takes to actually use the slider in the home page. I can’t figure out how to set it up. Do I create a slide from the Word Press Admin or edit the actual home page. I tried to upload some pictures to the home page as the featured images, but nothing shows up.
Thanks
John,
Thanks for checking out the Best theme! Using the slider functionality on the homepage is all handled through the Slides custom post type in the sidebar of the admin panel. In this section, you can add, update, and remove slides as you need. All you’ll need to do is enter a title (which will appear as the title of your slide), some content (which will appear directly below the title), and upload a featured image (which will appear as the image for your slide).
If you want, you can add an optional link, which will make the title and image clickable to a page or post on your website, or anywhere else you’d like it to go. If you have any questions on how the theme works, feel free to ask us a question here at any point, but also make sure to consult the documentation as it outlines all of the functionality available in the theme.
Hope that helps, and thanks again for trying out the theme!
i’ve import your XML sample data dan set the config as your documentation said, bu t my slider won’t shown on my home page.
What sould i do to fix it?
sorry, i’ve found the trouble maker, it’s minify on w3 total cache plugin, when i uncheck it, it run well
Glad to know things ended up working out for you, anxga. Thanks for checking everything out!
Hi Kyle!
Forgive me … just checking to see if you’ve released the updated version. No worries! Just anxious to see it!
Jo,
Not a problem at all. You’ll be pleased to know that v1.1 was released earlier today and your feature request of adding the slider on the blog page was implemented! Download the newest version to give it a shot and let us know if you run into any issues. Additionally, make sure to keep up with the newly added changelog directly above the “Related Articles” section for our notes on each release!
Great! Thanks Kyle! Love that you implemented the slider on the blog page! I’m going to download now … won’t have time to play with it until tonight but will definitely let you know how it goes once I’m able to give it a go
Thanks again! I’m sure it’ll be awesome
This has really been giving me trouble. Can you tell me how to change when the sidebar is moved to the bottom at when the window is resized? I’ve been having problems with IE.
Thanks
Joe,
Do a search in your code editor for
.row > [class*="span"]
, and look for where the properties of the.span
classes are set to the following:float: none;
display: block;
width: auto;
margin: 0;
I believe these styles sit within the
@media (max-width: 1099px)
breakpoint. Keep in mind that while we support IE8, it does not view any content within a media query, so you’re only going to get the standard desktop site without any responsiveness in IE8.If you’re encountering any other issues let us know so we can address them. As far as we know from our testing, everything works as it should in all modern browsers, as well as IE8+.
Thanks for checking out the theme!
Great theme, congratulations.
I’ve been playing with the code a little, I’m not an expert but I managed to accomplished what I want with the theme.
But I have a question, how do I make a full-width blog layout? I mean, not boxed as it is now.
Thanks again for this awesome theme.
George,
Thank you very much for the kind words! I’m glad you were able to make all of the updates that you set out to implement in the theme.
As the Best Theme currently stands, there is no page template for a full-width blog layout. If we receive some more feedback that others are looking for this feature as well, we can look into including it in the v1.2 release.
If you want to setup the page yourself for the time being, my recommendation would be to copy the contents of the
index.php
file into a new file calledtemplate-fullwidth-blog.php
or something along those lines that is easily distinguishable from the other template files. Make sure to add the appropriate header information at the top of the template file so that the proper name shows up when choosing it from the select menu. Something along these lines should work just fine:<?php
/*
* Template Name: Full Width Blog Layout
*/
?>
Next, simply remove the sidebar section (it is a
<div>
with a class ofsidebar
). Then, change the<div>
with a class ofspan8
tospan12
. These changes will take care of the biggest updates towards making the blog page full-width. There will be other tweaks you’ll need to apply, but they’ll be up to your taste mostly.Hopefully that helps and let us know if you have any other questions!
I’m really loving this theme!
The one issue I found is that certain plugins cause Javascript elements from the theme to stop fuctioning on the ‘Home’ Template page when used as a static page. The plugins that cause this so far are ‘The Events Calendar’ and ‘MediaElements.js’. The theme functions that are effected are the slider and the drop-down navigation function.
Otherwise this is a great theme! I look forward to any updates.
-Tom
Tom,
Thanks for the feedback. We’ll definitely take a look into this and see if we can work something in for a future release.
Thanks!
Hi
What a great theme! I have to echo the comments above. I’m a fairly basic wordpress user but love everything about this theme….almost.
I’m wondering if there is a way not to have to have a photo with every blog post (the “go to post —>” image / feature image). I’d rather just have text and not *have* to post a photo with each blog post. Is this a possibility? Does what I’m asking even make sense?
Thanks!
Frances
Hey Frances,
Thanks for checking out the theme!
If you’d like to remove the image that automatically appears above the titles, you’ll need to open up the various
featured-image.php
template file and replace everything between the<php ?>
tags with the following:if ( has_post_thumbnail() ) {
the_post_thumbnail();
}
That should get you all set. Let us know if you need anything else! Thanks!
Really Great Theme.
I’m playing with this theme for couple of days. I have only one question about languages.
Do you plan in next release to make your theme translatable upon WP codex (http://codex.wordpress.org/Translating_WordPress)?
Thanks for great work!
Many,
Thanks for checking out the theme! Hopefully you’ve been able to make good use of it in your projects.
As the theme was initially developed for Blogging Experiment alone, there were no plans to add internationalization support. However, since we’ve open-sourced it we’ve gotten a few requests for this feature. Since the theme is a free release we can’t guarantee anything, but if we can get around to adding this feature at a certain time we’d definitely like to.
Thanks again and enjoy the theme!
Great theme! Simple and elegant and easy to customize. I’m about to launch my site and only have two concerns.
First, localization. Is it possible to translate the theme?
Second, in a previous theme I used a gallery plugin called lightbox plus. Now with the Best theme that doesn’t seem to work. Could it be some kind of JQuery conflict? Do you have a certain plugin you could recommend for gallery that works well with the theme?
Thanks for a brilliant job with this!
Zabani,
Thanks for your comments on the theme. Sorry it’s taken a while to get back. We’re pretty busy around here but like to reply to as many comments as possible whenever we have a moment!
I was just responding to Many’s comment above and noted that since the theme was initially only developed for personal use on Blogging Experiment, there was never any intent to add localization support. We’ve definitely received a few inquiries about it though, so we may try to work something in on a future release (probably not v1.2 coming out soon, but a later version).
Additionally, it is likely that there could be some sort of jQuery conflict with a plugin. We’re looking into this issue as well with the theme. We never had any issues with plugins we use but some people have noted that certain plugins are experiencing some issues. What specific issues are you having with your plugins? This might be able to help us track down any issues a little easier.
Thanks!
I love your theme – thank you.
I set up my wife’s website quickly and easily, figuring out every mod I wanted to make. A quick question for another site I am setting up to promote my new book:
The front page slider seems to slide the images up from the bottom. I’d prefer from the side, so found the table in slider.js, but when I change settings between horizontal and vertical, it makes no difference. So I assume that there is a setting somewhere else that over-rides this default settings table. But I cannot find it after a lot of searching. Can this be changed easily? If so, could you offer a pointer, please?
Many thanks
Mike
Mike,
Thanks for the kind words.
The slider actually fades the images for the transitions, but uses a CSS animation to slide up the caption. If you’d like to change the slider animation, open up the
slider.js
file in thejs
directory and replaceanimation: "fade"
withanimation: "slide"
. This should give you the desired result.Thanks again for checking out the Best theme!
Kyle
As all else with your theme – simple fix, worked first time.
Just annoyed with myself I didn’t think to try it!
Many thanks
Mike
No problem, Mike!
I love the look of this theme and was excited to switch over from a previous theme I was using. The only problem I had with the switch was the shortcode for a “toggle” I was using in all my posts. I like using the “toggle” because it helps make my content look like less than it really is. Do you foresee adding the toggle shortcode into a future version?
If not, is there an easy way I can do it myself without messing up the theme?
I have experience modifying the css to style the site how I want, but when I have to call js within a php file I worry about messing it up.
Chris,
Thanks for checking out the Best theme! We’re glad you’re enjoying it.
You could try tracking down the “toggle” shortcode from your old theme and throw it into the
shortcodes.php
file for Best and that should have it function like before for how your content is added in. After that, you’ll need to make sure to move over any accompanying CSS and JS files.Thanks again for downloading Best!
Thanks for sharing this great theme.
No problem, Raymond. Thank you for your kind words!
Hiya!
First off: Great site! I’m still kinda new to all of this, but I’ve been able to figure it out pretty quickly on your template.
My question is this: In your demo site you have a still image instead of a slider. That’s what I’d like to do as well. While I understand that all I have to do is leave a single slide in the slides folder, how do I make it full width? I don’t have a need to have a widget on the right. Do I have to go into the editor and do it manually?
Thanks again!
Trent
Hey Trent,
Thanks for checking out the theme and for your comments!
If you want the slider to be full-width on the homepage, first open up the
sidebar-home.php
template file and remove the following lines of code:<div class="span3 widget-area">
<?php dynamic_sidebar( 'sidebar-2' ); ?>
</div><!-- end .span3 -->
Then, open up the
template-home.php
file and change thespan9
class surrounding the slider to aspan12
.Hopefully that helps. Thanks again for checking everything out!
This theme rocks!
Just one question though… What’s the easiest way to center the logo image? I’ve been trying different methods, but all of them fail at some point.
Thanks!
Hey Andrei,
You should be able to add a class to the container holding the logo and give it a style of
text-align: center;
. The one thing to take note of is that the logo area is in aspan8
section, as there is a banner area to the right in aspan4
. If you want it to be full-width, you’ll need to remove the banner section and change thespan8
class surrounding the logo to aspan12
.Additionally, the logo does become automatically centered at a smaller breakpoint for tablets and mobile phones. Just something to keep in mind.
Hope that helps!
Hey guys,
I’ve tried installing it, two times and there are a couple of inconsistencies —
1. When I install it, the Flexslider has a span8 instead than a span9
2. There are two additional divs above this that make it look weird
3. I can’t activate the widget-area div below the flexslider even if i tick the adequate box.
4. the CSS file still says v1.0 (is the 1.1 uploaded to a diff server?)
I’ve done heavy WP customizations, so i’m not really a novice — is there some problems i’m not aware of?
Thanks for your awesome template — looks amazing, but it’s taken me some time to try and debug these features and so far it’s not doing it for me.
Jose,
Thanks for checking out the theme! We appreciate the heads up on the version number not getting changed in the theme. That’s been updated and uploaded to the server again.
Regarding your first issue, the Flexslider has a
span8
class on theindex.php
and aspan9
on thetemplate-home.php
file since it’s meant to be a little larger on the homepage and the main content area of the blog page is in aspan8
. Not sure if that’s what you’re referencing, but that is actually how it is intended to be (and has to be) due to the layouts of the different pages. We haven’t heard any issues regarding this as of yet, so if it’s something else that’s giving you a problem, please let us know so we can look into it.For the second point, I’m not exactly sure what you’re referencing here either, haha. We haven’t received any reports of the slider on the blog page looking weird, so we’d need to see an example (many of the users who have commented on this page use the theme for their personal sites and you can find a few examples of them using the slider on the blog page and homepage without any issue).
As to your third point, did you make sure to put any widgets in the the the widget areas before activating it? If not, the row will simply collapse as there is no content in there. I just ran a test of the theme on my local server and I can’t replicate any similar results.
I hope that helps in clearing some things up. Thanks again for checking out the theme and we’re glad you’re getting some use out of it!
hey dude,
this is awesome, thank you a very lot!!
Only a few comments:
1. Multilevel Menu is not working for me. Any ideas? As i see here: http://best.bloggingexperiment.com it should work.
2.Slider Images need some time to appear (first grey box – later the image). The grey box is bigger than the later images?
3. Can you write/docu a little bit about sizing and positioning in your theme? I want to add something specific stuff and it’s working in every screening.
4. Do you know where to add favicon on a multisite installation?
best
stefan
Stefan,
Thanks for checking out the theme!
Not sure why your menus wouldn’t be working without seeing an example. Nobody else has reported this issue, so it could be a plugin interfering with the dropdown script. Either that or maybe your WordPress menus weren’t staggered correctly to create the dropdowns.
I’m also not entirely sure what you’re referring to with the slider. I’m guessing that you mean the gray “Go to Post” image is showing on some posts and your featured images you’ve added on other posts aren’t as big. Since Best is a responsive theme, you’ll need to make sure to load in larger images for the slides so that they’re big enough on a desktop and will scale down to a smaller screen such as a tablet or mobile phone.
Regarding sizing and positioning, different elements might need to be tweaked a bit depending on the nature of the theme, so it’s tough to write something super detailed that will work for everyone’s particular situation. Standard WordPress classes like
alignright
andalignleft
are supported though and should get you most of the way. Anything more and you’re likely getting into something more custom.There are some utility classes included with Best, for adding a little margin or padding to an object as needed. They allow you to add nothing (a reset basically), to small, medium, and large on all sides. The way you call them is if you wanted to add a small amount of margin to the right of an element, you would call add the class
mrs
, for “margin,” “right,” and “small.” For no padding on the top of an element you would writeptn
, and so forth. Experimenting with these might help as well.Additionally, I’m not entirely sure on where you should add your favicon for a multisite installation, but a little Googling should be able to help you out there!
I hope some of that helped and thanks again for checking out the theme!
Hello, I know I am late to the party, but I am also having this problem. I have two nav menus set up for the top and bottom. The top nav only displays the drop downs on the homepage, but does not on any interior pages. I am running WordPress 3.5.1.
Also, has anyone had any problems updating to WordPress 3.8.1?
Hello
Thank you for a great theme!
Is it possible to add a 3 column template for the full version of this article?
Or perhaps tell how best to do this myself?
Thank you.
Hey Eduard,
Best is built on a 12 column grid, making it incredibly easy to implement a three-column layout if you’re looking to do so. I’d recommend making a new template file, giving it a custom name so it’s easily identifiable, and then you can start customizing from there. You’ll need to make sure you have some sort of
<div>
with a class ofrow
surrounding your columns. Then, simply create three<div>
elements with the appropriate classes for how large you want them to be. So if you wanted a small column on the left, main content in the middle, and a larger column on the right, you could do something likespan2
,span6
, and thenspan4
. You just need to make sure the span classes all add up to twelve.That’s all it takes! Thanks again for the kind words and for checking out the Best free WordPress theme!
Thank you, Kyle.
I’ve already done, everything works fine!
There is one question. I can not reduce the comment field. I changed to span8 => span6, but the field does not change.
Eduard,
This is something we’re looking to fix in v1.2 of the theme. You can go ahead and implement what we plan on doing ahead of time if you want (since there’s no guarantee on when we’ll be able to roll out the next update).
The following solution is completely responsive and doesn’t rely on fixed widths as it does currently. Make sure the text area has the following lines of code applied to it in your CSS file:
-webkit-box-sizing: border-box;
-moz-box-sizing: border-box;
box-sizing: border-box;
And then apply
width: 100%;
. This will allow the textarea to expand and contract to the exact size of the parent container, so in your case, it would match thespan6
.Hope this helps!
Hi,
This is an awesome theme and I loved it.
How do you set the height of the slider? If I link my slides to a particular post, the link text scrolls up beyond the top edge and I am unable to view the text. Is there a way to control this?
Thanks in advance for your support
Best regards
Hey Pramod,
Thanks for the kind words!
Best’s slider doesn’t have a place for you to set a height on it since it is intended to be responsive. The images you add to it should be included with that in mind. I’m not really sure what you’re referencing with the link text scrolling up or going beyond it’s container. The caption container is built to be responsive as well, so it will take pretty much any content you throw at it.
If you have a link to show an example of what you’re talking about, we might be able to help you out a little bit more. Until then, hopefully something in here helps out.
Thanks again, and check back for future version releases!
Hey Kyle
Thanks for the response. Really appreciate your time. I realised it has got to do with image size. I have fixed it. On another note, doesn’t this theme support tags on posts? If I add the tags, it doesn’t get reflected in the post. Any pointers?
Best
Pramod
Pramod,
Tags show up at the bottom of each post. If you’d like them somewhere else, like towards the top, you can move them to wherever you’d like.
Thanks!
Hi there,
Thanks for the theme, i really like it. I was wondering if it were possible to put a menu beside the heading title, rather than above it.
Thanks,
James
James,
We might be able to look into this request in the v1.2 release, but we can’t guarantee anything. For now, if you’d like a menu beside the title that would have to be a custom implementation on your part.
Thanks for checking the theme out!
Hi Kyle,
When I enter the tags while I compose the posts and say “update”, the tags vanish! All older tags are also not visible. Can you please help?
Regards
Pramod,
Are they vanishing from the backend, or simply not appearing on the front-end? Our current version of the theme (v1.1) along with the previous version (v1.0) both display tags properly on our testing installation and on Blogging Experiment. If you’re running any plugins or additional scripts, try disabling them one at a time to see if any of them are causing the issue.
Thanks!
Sorry one more question. I am trying to center the heading title, was messing around in the img bit in css but can’t get it to center?!
Thanks again.
James,
The title is floated left, so you’d first need to remove that, then center align the text of the container. Additionally, there is a built-in advertisement area to the right of the title area. The title area takes up a
span8
on the 12 column grid that Best is built on, and the advertisement section is aspan4
. You’ll need to remove thespan4
area and replace thespan8
with aspan12
so that it is the full width of the containing element, then it will center properly.Hope that helps!
Hi,
This theme is very great and clean. Thank you very much for this wonderful theme.
Anyway, I have a question.
I am very totally new to CSS and find terribly difficult to adjust the column.
I would like to make the home page shown like below.
--------------------------------------
Slider
--------------------------------------
Category A (shows 3 latest post)
--------------------------------------
Category B | Category C | Category D
--------------------------------------
Do you have any guideline or if you could do for me would be really appreciated.
Hey Andy,
It looks like you’re wanting to customize the theme a bit regarding moving things around. While we can’t help you out with this as it could take some time, I can at least tell you that adjusting the size of parent containers is very simple. Best is built on a 12 column grid, so if you want the slider to be full-width, adjust its parent container from a
span9
to aspan12
. Then, you’ll need to move the widget container next to it out of that row and either delete it or relocate it somewhere. Follow these steps of resizing thespan
classes and making sure that the containers you want relocated are all placed in arow
div.Hopefully this will help you get started on things. Thanks again for checking out the Best free WordPress theme!
Hi, if you want I can internationalise your theme (i18n)
Hey froozeify,
Thank you very much for the offer! At this time we aren’t accepting any outside coding, but if we decide to add this and have time to review user-submitted code, we’ll keep your information on hand to get in touch with you.
Thanks!
Hi Kyle, loving the theme!
I’m trying to change the top fixed navbar to be the same width as the main container without breaking the responsive design.
I tried using .navbar-fixed-top { margin: 0 auto; width: 1060px } but it breaks on smaller screens.
Any ideas? Thanks!
Hey Jeff,
The width for the navbar content is set in a few different breakpoints, so you’ll need to find all of those and set them to your desired widths.
You’ll want to look for the following combination of selectors:
.navbar .navbar-inner .container
So, on larger desktops, you’ll find something similar to the following block:
@media (min-width: 1100px) {
.navbar .navbar-inner .container {
width: 1062px;
}
}
Make sure to find that selector in all of the appropriate media queries and set is as needed.
Thanks!
Hi Kyle,
Unfortunately, that didn’t work, but thanks to your comments, I figured out which key areas I needed to change .navbar-fixed-top.
1) The default .navbar-fixed-top: margin:0 auto; width:1060px;
2) Under @media (min-width: 1320px). Added width: 1290px;
3) Under @media (max-width: 1099px). Added width: auto;
Hope this helps anyone looking to do the same thing!
Hey just wanted to give you a brief heads up and
let you know a few of the images aren’t loading correctly. I’m not sure
why but I think its a linking issue. I’ve tried it in two different browsers and both show the same outcome.
Hey there,
Thanks for the heads up. We haven’t heard this from anyone else and we’re currently using the most recent version on this site with no problem. If you’re running into a linking issue it could be something with your WordPress install. If the problem persists, I’d look into updating to the most recent version and make sure that something in your database isn’t faulty.
Thanks!
Hi,
This theme is just what i’ve been looking for, love it!
But I’ve a question about the “Go to Post” featured images. I want to add my own images instead of the “go to post” but don’t know how. I installed different kinds of WP plugins like “featured image” but they won’t work. How can I add my own image to each different post?
Hey there,
If you want your own default image for any post without an image, simply go into the
img
directory and change out the default image with your own. Other than that, if you’re trying to add images to posts, simply use the featured image functionality of WordPress to do so.Hope that helps!
Hi kyle
Thanks for the theme, its really great
I have a question, Im not sure whats the appropiate size for the image on the slider. Depending on the image I see the slider gets wider or thiner. Is there a fixed size that would make the slider look better than with other sizes?
Thank you in advance
Hey Dan,
The slider is responsive, meaning that it will resize as needed at different breakpoints so that your content looks great on all devices (phones, tablets, desktops, et cetera). At it’s widest, I believe the slider is
844px
wide, so I would make your images that wide and then they will resize as needed as the site gets smaller. You can make them as tall as you want. It’s a best practice to make sure that all of your images in the slider are the same width and height so that transitions are smooth.Thanks for checking out the Best free WordPress theme!
Hello Kyle, congratulations on a fantastic theme! So far its all pretty straightforward as far as editing the content and the style. css file, though i’m having a problem with the slider. I’ve changed the span to 12 to get a full-width slider on the homepage, but the height doesnt reflect the actual height of the images used, its only showing about half the image (see site link: http://dipeshparmar.com/blog/), and i cant figure out how to change the height so it reflects the correct height within style.css file, can you help?
Hey Dipesh,
I can’t see the problem because it looks like you’re trying out another design currently, but the height of the slider is not set. It is determined solely by the images that you’re using in the slider. I’ve tested this out on numerous installs and never encountered an issue like you’re stating. As long as your images are the full width of the site (as a
span12
), you should be good to go and the slider’s height will respond automatically.Thanks again for checking out the theme. Enjoy!
Hello Kyle. apologies for the changes to my theme. I’ve changed it back to the Best theme so you can see my problem, hopefully you will see the same. This is the only issue stopping me from using your great theme to publish my work, as i need a full-size portfolio slider.
Thanks for Best, I’m enjoying setting up my site with it.
One question though, I’ve got a static front page set as the Home Page (using template home). I’ve created a page called blog which is empty and I’ve got the posts pointing to that.
The trouble is I have no posts at all on my site, its all static pages, and I’m getting an error message telling me that I haven’t written any content yet. Is there a way I can remove the link the blog posts?
thanks
Hey Anne-Marie,
Thanks for checking out the theme! My advice would be that if you’re just using static pages and don’t plan on having a traditional blog on your site, simply delete your “Blog” page and and don’t add a link pointing to it. That way, you won’t see the page with not content (which really isn’t serving a purpose at this time).
If you are eventually planning on writing content and simply don’t have anything yet, I’d go ahead and probably write an introduction post first just to let readers know what to expect from the blog.
If ALL of that still isn’t what you’re after, you can remove the warning message by going into the
index.php
file and removing the warning.Hope that helps!
Hi Kyle, thanks for this great theme – I love to work with it!!
One question regarding the home page:
I’d like to add the page content below the slider (same width). So the structure would look like this:
----------------------
Slider Home | Sidebar
Content Home | Sidebar
----------------------
Widget Row
----------------------
Left of Blog | 3 Posts
----------------------
Could you please give me a hint how to do this?
I tried to shift some of code around but I just messed it up… 😉
Thank you!!
Mandy,
Thanks for the kind words and for checking out the theme. We’re glad to hear you’re enjoying it!
If I’m understanding your request correctly, you should be able to achieve your desired result by doing the following. Find the
span9
that is surrounding the slider. Look for theflexslider
inside that and place the following line below the closing</div>
forflexslider
:<?php the_content(); ?>
This should pull through whatever you have in your content editor on your homepage through and display it below your slider and keep it on the left side so that the sidebar remains on the right. After that, just style the section to your liking and you’re set!
Works perfectly, thanks for your help!!
No problem!
Enjoy.

Pramod,
We’ll try to have a release here soon with some updates we’ve been meaning to get out. Thanks again for your continued interest in the Best free WordPress theme!
Hello.
When planned version 1.2?
Thanks.
Hello,
I am trying to display the Homepage Intro Text. I clicked Display Homepage Intro Text in the Theme Options Section and left the default text in the box to be displayed. It is not showing up. What am I missing?
Thank you.
Never mind. I figured it out. Thanks anyway!
Hey there,
Glad to hear you got everything figured out, Shannon! I’m going to take a guess in assuming that you likely hadn’t set your homepage using the
Home
template? Just wanted to clarify this for all users as we have received some support requests in the past on it. Just ensure that you create a page using theHome
template and then set it as a static front page in your WordPress Settings.Thanks!
I did not use the homepage template. I went into Appearance>Theme Options>Layout Options and made choices from there to set up my homepage I have re-read the documentation and it is not clear to me where to access the homepage templates.
The layout I really want is:
Logo (have)
Featured content bar (have)
Widget for email list sign up (need)
Slider (have)
(Delete) Go To Post slider
Text (have)
I tried to build this on a static page but the slider doesn’t show up.
I don’t know much about editing code, but if that is what I need to do to set this up, I can give it a go.
Thanks!
Shannon
Hi All,
I have to admit this is one of the best themes I’ve seen lately! I’m not an expert and spent quite o lot of time trying to bite in to the thing, but I think I’m doing ok.
Unfortunately I found a silly thing I cannot jump over – the pagination. How and where could I edit the pagination = translate the Next and Previous to different language? Will really appreciate some help.. Greetings to all and again thank you for a great job on the theme
Hi All again – found it.
In case any one was looking for the same thing: in the template files there is a directory /inc and there is a file “theme-setup.php”. There all a couple of things there but what will do the pagination will begin in 61 line of code.
…
$pagenavi_options[‘first_text’] = (‘First Page’);
…
Here and below you just have to translate whatever you neet the (‘First Page’) to (‘whatever you want to be displayed’).
All best!
Hello guys!
I just finished to implement you Best Theme on my website and it is amazing!
I just have a couple of questions…
I have not find anywhere the chance to build a portfolio natively, so I installed a plug-in and I solved, but is it in your plans add something about portfolios for photographers or crazy people like me??
Second question I find really slow the loading of the slide in the home page, I am sure is not about my host or broadband because we tested it from different realities already. And firebug alarm you about the plugin.js when you pass through a proxy… I just ask if it can be a general issue or it is just me…
the pics in the sliders are 2 and 72 dpi PNG/JPG and very lightful.
After loaded it is super speedy and a lot of satisfaction!!
Thanks a lot for this incredible theme!!
Hey there,
We currently don’t have any plans to add a portfolio natively as the original purpose of the design was to be used on our personal site and we didn’t need one, but we might look into this option down the road for users who would like this functionality.
Regarding the images loading slowly, this sounds like it might have something to do with your ISP or hosting provider as we’ve never had any issues or complaints from others that the slides take a while to load. I’d try testing out a few different images and having some friends check the site from different locations/computers to see if it is just something to do with your connection/personal computer.
Thanks again for checking out the Best free WordPress theme!
I love this great theme! Very elegant and easy to customize.
This is one of my customization:
http://www.lapioppavini.it
Renzo,
Thank you very much for sharing such a wonderful adaptation of the Best theme! It goes to show what a little imagination can go a long way. Great use of color and texture to fit the client’s content and message. We’re glad that you chose the Best free WordPress theme to use on this project!
Hi,
This is a fantastic theme! Realy great job! Though I’m having problems with applying the shord code.. the [column][/column] code adds an empty tags in the code and this brings the whole content one line down. If I just write [row][column spa=12]content[/column][/row] (in one eline) than the content doesn’t get the “p” formating and is very small. I don’t know where it comes from.. could you help me?
all best!
WordPress does have some auto-formatting it applies to post content, but I’ve always found it to be more of a hinderance than anything. If your paragraphs aren’t looking correct, I’d try inspecting it in Chrome (right click on the element you want to look at and select “Inspect Element”) to see exactly what is getting output on your page. If you rely on that heavily, you’ll need to mess around with the content a bit to get it to look right. Personally, I prefer to remove the auto-formatting. There are many ways to do this, but here’s one article from a while back on CSS-Tricks that goes through some options and has some great comments, too.
Just wanted to find out, the theme is perfect and works really well. I am just having one issue and that’s if you set up a drop down menu, it displays perfectly on laptops and desktop browsers but on tablet and smartphone devices the menu floats in the middle of the page? It still has the drop down but almost as if the hide function isn’t working. Any ideas?
Glad to hear you’re liking the theme. We just checked out the site on a couple phones we have laying around (iPhone 4s / Android) and we’re not seeing any problems. What kind of tablet are you using and what browser? This will help us track down the issue a little better.
Thanks!
Hi again,
I’ve been working with the BEST Theme for a couple of days now and in the end I had a look at it through IE. I simply cannot understand how Microsoft can be providing a browser that is simply so incredibly horrible. Nevertheless so many people still use it. Does it bother you that the animated thumbnail images are jumping so roughly when mouse over them? Is there a way to somehow make it smooth like when viewed in Firefox, Opera and Chrome?
Love this theme! So many options, responsive, beautiful, crisp, clean … you name it! Can you recommend a gallery to use to highlight images with text?
Thank you again!
Hey Steph,
Thank you so much for you kind words! Means a lot to us.
Regarding a plugin for what you’re needing, I’m not entirely sure as that isn’t something I’ve ever had to use in the past. However, if you take a moment to browse through the plugin repository, I’m sure you’ll find something that will fit your needs.
Thanks again!
I was super pumped about this theme. Super excited.
there’s a couple of problems, the resizing problem of the header banner adspace. I cannot for the life of me find the dimensions to set up an appropriate email capture here, or resize it appropriately to set an email capture in that space. So sad, because There really is no functional place to put an email capture form on the site other than the sidebar and at the bottom of the posts.
I also discovered BEST has ZERO setup or support for videos. No video posting on the front page, no resizing of videos. It doesn’t look like this theme will work for me (and most other bloggers out there) until video functionality is added. This is an absolute must in this day and age.
Thank you for the premium effort to deliver a highly functional theme otherwise. it is a clean and beautiful theme but these two issues make it a no-can-use for me.
I am very sad as I spent two weeks working with this theme trying to get it to work for me.
Isis,
Thanks for your comments on the theme, we always appreciate a little constructive feedback!
As I’m sure you know, Best was developed by our team for personal use on Blogging Experiment and released as a little gift back to the community. Because of this, there are bound to be some features that don’t fit everyone’s needs, or that simply aren’t there. That being said, hopefully we can help you out.
The dimensions of the header banner area are fluid, due to the nature that Best is a responsive design meant to work well on all devices. If working with responsive design is something you’re new to, it can be a little daunting/frustrating at times due to the way elements change their size. If you’re simply using an image, making it fit the largest size on the desktop will work as it will automatically scale down on smaller sizes. If you’re trying to do something more complex, like add a form into that space, it will definitely take a little work to get everything positioned correctly on all screen sizes. If you have a friend or someone you know who does development work on the side, they should be able to help you out no problem.
Regarding video support, Best does support responsive videos via a couple shortcodes. You can read more about them here. If you need a video to display on the homepage, you can use shortcodes in the widget areas if need be, or you can use the full-width template, or content-right/left templates to create the layout you’re looking for. That, coupled with our
[row]
and[column]
shortcodes, you should have no problem achieving the layout you’re looking for. If you’re trying to add a video to a post in place of the featured image, it is true that this feature is not available, but is something we might look into adding on a future release.Thanks again for trying out the theme, and hopefully you’ve found something that meets all your needs!
Thank you for your feedback – The youtube shortcode does not seem to be working. I’m having to use iframe to embed video.
I’ll reiterate if you want this theme to be considered the Best Responsive Theme, video embedded on the blog page is a must have nowadays. Outside of that and the header issue (not being able to embed an actual subscribe form on the header) I’m fairly happy with this theme. It’s fast to load and very easy to work with now I’ve learned your methodology in the coding framework. I am hoping you’ll recode the header so we can put a subscribe form at the top. It would make all the difference in the world to those of us needing to capture email addresses or encourage people to subscribe to our rss feed or podcasts.
I did employ a little hack to get videos featured on the blogroll itself – that may have counteracted the shortcodes but the developer insists that didn’t happen. unfortunately the developer was not able to script responsiveness into the videos. I’m more than happy to share the code he employed with you.
Hopefully you’ll consider some of those changes in the future as you continue to develop this theme. I’m also hoping you’ll add a few more short codes 😉 MySiteMyWay has countless shortcodes that were AWESOME in building websites… Just suggestions of course. Much love to you guys.
Hi Isis,
Were you able to get the YouTube shortcode working in Best Theme? I think I’ve been encountering the same problem you have.
Whenever I include the link in the shortcode like this, [youtube src="http://youtube.com/link..."] I get a blank box. Or if I use “link” instead of “src”, then the entire page I’m trying to embed the videos in, appears in the container where the video should display.
Not sure if this was the problem you’re having but any advice you might have would be greatly appreciated.
Nevermind, I figured it out. You need to be sure to copy the embed url by right clicking on the video of the YouTube page.
Hi,
I have some CSS lines displaying in the header and I don’t know how to remove them:
“body { background-color: ; }
.featured-bar { background-color: ; }”
Looks like it’s added automatically via the wp_head() function.
Any idea how I can remove those lines?
Thank you!
Mandy,
Do you mean that the CSS is being output to your page somehow? Could you provide us with an example link so we can see what you’re talking about?
Thanks!
I did some testing, and these CSS declarations do come from the theme options page.
If I fill in some background color etc, it gets included in the header. But since I don’t use the settings page (I included all CSS details in the styles.css because I don’t want to have any css in the header) it would be great if there’s any way to remove these lines.
Thanks!
Mandy
I already installed the theme and data, but I just cant see the widget row as I see it on Demo. I cant see the “All blog posts” box.
Theres any trick to show them?
Hey there,
Have you gone to the widgets section of your site and added in your widgets already? The content will display automatically once you put something there.
Love this theme, but one thing I’m struggling with is the image quality when you click on a photo gallery. The way you can slide through the pics is very slick, but the colors are faded and they are a bit blurry compared to when you click on the “full size image” option to see the original. Is there a way to fix this?
Hey Henry,
Glad to hear you’re enjoying the theme. Could you please provide a link of an example? This will help us be able to look into this more thoroughly.
Thanks!
Thank you.
Check out the preview for this photo. http://henrypowderly.com/2012/03/the-boats-of-bermuda/#jp-carousel-4614
The boats in the background are really fuzzy, the blue of the water is very pale.
The click on the “view full size” option in the info box and you can see how different the two are.
http://henrypowderly.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/DSC_4996.jpg
Appreciate the help.
Henry,
I believe this gallery viewer is part of the WordPress 3.5 update, as this is not something that is included with the theme itself. Additionally, I’m not really noticing any degradation in the quality of the photos. With responsive designs, you might lose some detail that you have in your original photo due to the nature of photos being resized to fit the viewport of the device that is accessing it. Loading the original, I’m noticing that it is very large and the size (roughly 1.1 MB) is quite big for web images. You might want to look into optimizing your images for the web.
Hopefully that helps you.
Thanks again for using Best!
Hello again! We’ve been able to use this theme for our non-profit public art project that raises money for student scholarships! So thank you for providing a free and professionally designed site that will allow us to communicate to prospective donors.
One question, however, are you able to have more than the 3 images in the slider? We have 4 loaded, but only 3 are live on the site. I’ve searched within the templates and css and can’t find where that can be changed.
Any help would be much appreciated!
With the last update of WP (3.5) I’ve lost the responsive feature for videos. Could you give us a possible solution?
Alfredo,
Sorry to hear you’re running into some problems. Our demo install of Best is currently running v3.5 and is still functioning properly. Did you happen to install any new plugins recently, or perhaps edit a post and accidentally alter a shortcode?
Thank you for this theme, I am new to blogging and have a question. How do I speed up my page load times? Average load time is 24 seconds for my homepage. I am using this as a blog and the homepage shows my featured image but in the full size. In past themes this hasn’t been an issue. If you suggest resizing my images before I upload, how do you know what size works best until you upload it? I usually just resize in WordPress so I can see what works.
If there is a way for the homepage to show the featured image as the way I resized it in my posts, please let me know. I don’t want to have to switch themes but the load time is killing me. Thank you for your help!
Hi there – beautiful theme! Here’s my question… I’ve created a child theme from the Best theme, but I can’t for the life of me get the child theme style.css to work. Is there a selector I’m not aware of that I’m leaving out or something? (http://eggsellence.com/)
I can fiddle with the CSS in the Chrome developer tool (right-click -> inspect element), but using the same selectors in the style.css file of the child theme results in… nothing.
Having learned from experience, I’m hesitant to make changes to the main Best style.css.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!
Hey Daniel,
This is something that has been brought to our attention before, and we’re as perplexed as you are. As you know, Best was created by our team here to be used simply for internal reasons, so we never built it with the intention of using a child theme. That being said, we haven’t done anything to it that should hinder it from a standard child theme setup. This is something we’re looking to address in a v1.2 update as we know our more experienced users could certainly benefit from it. For now, you could try creating a backup of the original style.css file, then creating a new one with your changes. When an update is made available in the future, if you only made a few changes you could take note of where those are and manually add them back in with the update. It’s not ideal, but it’s at least something.
Thanks again for checking out the theme, and thank you for your kind comments.
I used BEST to setting up a site for a small community of hostels in a small valley in Italy.
It works very well, in multilingual mode with qTranslate!!! Great.

I resolved my issue, so I take back my question, thanks
Annie,
We’re glad to hear that you got everything sorted out. We apologize for our late response as things have been a little busy around here for us lately! Image optimization is definitely a huge key to quick load times, as images typically make up the bulk of any page download. It appears that the images on your site are at an acceptable size. If any issues start popping up again, try looking into various caching plugins for WordPress that help to store static assets so that they don’t have to be downloaded each time a visitor comes back to your site.
Thanks again for checking out the theme and we’re glad to hear that you’re liking it!
Hi,
this is the theme that I’m searching for from a long time.
Only a problem,
I don’t like so much the vertical line in the background.
How May I take it away?
Thank u so much
Ok, sorry for my last strange request.
I visited again my blog with your best theme but with google chrome. At this time I didn’t see any vertical line on the page template.
So I think this is a bug of your theme. I’ve visited again the theme with another Macbook air with safari (I have a macbook air so I tried with one of my friend) and I’ve seen again the vertical bar.
So If an user visit your theme and also the pages of bloggingexperiment.com he can see this strange vertical line on the screen: http://thelabitaly.com/others/Schermata%202013-01-27%20alle%2015.33.41.png
How is possible to remove this problem?
Ps I don’t know if this problem is only on Safari with macbook air. I hadn’t the possibility to try with safari on a different kind of mac from Air.
Thank you very much and sorry for my bad english.
Dario,
We’re aware of this bug, and as far as we can tell it is not theme related. Rather, it has something to do with Safari on a MacBook Air. When we test out the site on any other Mac product (iMac, MacBook Pro, et cetera), this vertical line is not present. It only seems to appear on the MacBook Air. It is certainly an odd bug, but we’ve noticed a few other odd things happening in Safari for MacBook Air on some other designs we work on, so it’s definitely not an isolated issue. I truly wish there was something we could do about it, but it’s a browser vendor issue, not a theme issue.
Thanks for checking out the theme and we hope it meets your needs!
Love the BEST theme! Quick question on the static home page as shown here http://best.bloggingexperiment.com/
Is it possible to swap the positions of “Homepage Widget Row” and the “3 blog entries”? We would like to have the blog entries be right below the slider and then the Widget row to appear.
Any pointers would be appreciated !
thanks
paddy
Paddy,
You will need to swap out some content in
loop-home.php
andsidebar-home.php
. Basically, you would need to take the entire content inloop-home.php
and place it inside the<div>
that holdsdynamic_sidebar( 'sidebar-3' )
. Then take thedynamic_sidebar( 'sidebar-3' )
and put it inside theloop-home.php
file. Finally, you’ll need to go intofunctions.php
and change thespan
classes insidebar-3
from 4 to 3.Hopefully that helps you achieve what you’re looking to accomplish! Thanks again for checking out the Best free WordPress theme!
Hey, Thanks For The Free theme.
but i have 1 Request for this theme.
Can you make The blogger Version ?
Well, That’s all From me.
Thanks 😀
No plans to at this time, Panjijey…our apologies. Come on over to WordPress though! You’ll like it!!
Hello,
Thanks very much for your reply to Paddy’s question above. I helped him apply the changes that you suggested which seemed to work well! Here is the site in question: http://cloudstrides.com/
I was also wondering, does this theme have any option for social media sharing of the blog post excerpts that appear in the homepage?
Thanks so much for any help!
Steve
Hey Steven,
At this point, we don’t have that feature built into the base theme, however it wouldn’t be very difficult to add on an individual basis. We are keeping notes of some of the more common requests people are making and will look into options for possibly adding them in a future release, but as of now, that is not something built in out of the box (primarily because there are just so many social plugins/tools that are out there).
Hello,
i would like to add widget area instead of resent post loop on the Home Page Template, I tried some tutorials over the internet and cameup with as follows:
Warning: Cannot modify header information – headers already sent by (output started at /home/lethimst/public_html/inttellect.com/wp-content/themes/best/functions.php:29) in /home/lethimst/public_html/inttellect.com/wp-admin/theme-editor.php on line 103
So, I would like to know how to add widget area into the Home Page Tempate, so that we can easily add text.
Regards
Owen
Owen,
If you are receiving that warning, it’s likely related to the fact that you have spaces present before your first opening
<?php
tag. Make sure that you’ve removed all spaces before this and that should remove the error.Other than that, the area directly above the best theme by default is a widget area, allowing you to input whatever you would like, so the easiest thing to do would be to turn off the blog area by not including it into the homepage template again if you simply don’t want that.
Let me know if this helps and thanks for checking out the Best WordPress theme!
Hi,
I just wanted to quickly say ‘Thank you!’ for such a wonderful gift! I have used the Best theme as a basis for my website. And thanks to your clean, well thought through code I have been able to turn it into something that feels completely my own. Check it out (yes, THIS is really your baby!): http://travel-b.com
Thank you, guys!
Cheers from Berlin,
Carola
Carola,
Simply FANTASTIC! Your site is a testament to what is possible with a little creativity and not being afraid to roll up your sleeves and get your hands a little dirty.
Thank you so much for sharing your site with us and for your very kind words. We always appreciate hearing from our users and seeing what they’re creating with Best.
Best wishes in your endeavors!
Hello,
I really like your theme. The simple layout and it’s responsive design which was something I was looking for in a theme.
I have run into a problem and have yet to find an answer via search engines since the word “Best” is so SEO heavy.
I am trying to figure out if the Best Theme is child theme compatible. I haven’t been able to find any information about this. The reason I ask is that I’ve created a child theme directory with it’s own style.css which imports the Best parent style.css. However, I’ve noticed that the child css is being completely ignored. Only the parent style.css is being executed. I know this shouldn’t be the case with themes that ARE child compatible.
If possible could you let me know if I can/should create a child theme of Best Theme and if so, how do I get my child theme style.css to be recognized.
Thank you,
Sean
Hey Sean,
Thanks for writing in with your questions on the Best theme. This is something that has been commented on before and is something we’re aware of. As you know, the Best theme was developed internally and given away to the community as a gift since we felt people could benefit from using it. As such, it was never intended to be used with child themes, so we never worried about testing it with one. This is something we want to take a look into eventually, we just can’t say when that will be exactly as we don’t provide official support for the theme since it’s free. However, if you’re able to take a look into it and see what could be causing the issue, I’m sure the community here would greatly appreciate if you wanted to share that information. Again, we’re sorry that the theme isn’t working as expected in this manner, just the short answer is it was never intended for this but it is definitely something we would like to eventually add support for so that users can benefit as much as possible. Thanks again for sharing with us.
Thank you for your timely response. I have been looking into this and if I find a solution I will be sure to share it here with the rest of the community. In the meantime I’ll just have to take my chances and work from the parent theme just to get this site done for my client and hope no updates occur for a while.
Thanks again,
Sean
Does anyone out there know of a support forum for the BEST Theme? Being that the word “best” is so SEO heavy it’s nearly impossible to find any support out there for this theme.
Currently I have a row just above the footer showing excerpts from the 3 latest posts created. This is pulled from the loop-home.php file. The only problem is I want this same layout but displaying 3 Pages, NOT Posts. Also, I don’t want these excerpts to change if/whenever I create a new Page. I want these 3 excerpts to always be the same. I can’t figure out how to change the code or rewrite the code and in which file.
I’ve tried placing some suggestions found online pertaining to other themes in my home-template but nothing appears.
Here is the suggestion:
‘parent’,
‘order’ =>’asc’,
‘post_type’ =>’page’,
‘post__in’ => array(sample-page ),
);
$page_query = new WP_Query($args); ?>
have_posts()) : $page_query->the_post(); ?>
<article >
<a href="” class=”post-thumb”>
<a href="” title=””>
• <a href="” title=””>
Is it possible to replace with Post excerpts with Page excerpts in BEST Theme?
Thank you in advance for any advice you may be able to provide.
Oops. The code didn’t post correctly above.
‘parent’,
‘order’ =>’asc’,
‘post_type’ =>’page’,
‘post__in’ => array(sample-page ),
);
$page_query = new WP_Query($args); ?>
have_posts()) : $page_query->the_post(); ?>
<article >
<a href="” class=”post-thumb”>
<a href="” title=””>
• <a href="” title=””>
Nevermind, I can’t get the code to post properly in this comment box.
If anyone can point me in the right direction to some sort of BEST Theme support forum I would be greatly appreciative.
Thanx.
Hi, I dont think there is any support forum out there. Most things as I see are solved here. You just need to be patient in waiting for a response.
But looking at your case: You want the same layout as it is on the home page just with the difference that You want static content from pages / linking to pages?
I would go to the home page template and reedit the part of code that takes care of the loop. The formating I would take from the loop, the content of what is to be displayed I would either change to the particular pages element or just insert the content directly there.
I dont know if this is what you want though. All best!
Thanks for your reply. I found the solution I was looking for. I found the Best XML file in this comment feed and uploaded it to my site. It pulled in all the styling of the Best Demo page.
Thank you so much for this theme! I absolutely love it. Here is what my new niche niche site looks like using the Best theme: http://bellydanceatanysize.com/. I didn’t make any changes to the CSS except for the font and font sizes.
Hi,
Thanks for the theme. Brilliant work, I’m lovin it. Unfortunately I have an issue with the blog section. All my blog posts are not showing up on the blog page. However the individual posts are live. Please can you help me fix this issue.
Thanks
Mohamed
Mohamed,
Have you read the documentation and followed the setup instructions under the “Page Templates” section?
Hello,
I read through all the questions above me and didn’t find the answer to my question. I really like this theme, except the fact that the menu is anchored to the top of the page. I wish the menu would scroll up and down with the rest of the page. How can I do this? I know a little css so I am guessing the answer has to do with z-index? anyway, I would appreciate it if you could let me know what I have to change to make this happen.
Also, it would be nice if I could change the background color of the menu from black to something else.
Jimmy,
No problem at all. Simply remove the class
navbar-fixed-top
from the wrapper container around the navbar inheader.php
. This will keep it from scrolling up and down the page with you.Thanks again for checking out the Best free WordPress theme!
this is a simply theme and great freemium wordpress theme 😀
i hope this theme get update
sorry for my bad english
Great theme! I ticked the twitter integration check box and insert my twitter username but my tweet feed didn’t appear on the page. Can you help? by the way, I’m also using Social Media Feather widget. Not sure if there are any conflicts.
Azlan
Azlan,
Twitter recently changed their API to a much more involved verification process, so the old Twitter feed does not work at the bottom of the site. My recommendation is to turn it off and locate a plugin that accomplishes what you’re after.
Thanks for checking out the theme!
Hi! Thank you for a wonderful theme!
Although, I was wondering if it is possible to show the whole blog posts instead of just the summary? I guess I have to get into the php for this (is it the main loop?), and I’m a bit scared of breaking the whole thing with my fiddling… Grateful for any advice!
Malin,
Look through the “loop” template files in the theme and try changing the function called
the_excerpt();
tothe_content();
. That should give you what you’re after.Thanks for trying out the Best WordPress Theme!
Hello! Are you planning on issuing something to address the new Twitter API?
I really like this theme. As a novice, I find it very easy to work with. However, I need some easy-to-understand technical assistance because I know nothing about coding.
I would like to change the number of columns from 3 to 4 on the homepage where the blog posts are displayed. Can someone walk me through how to do this? Which template do I edit. What shortcode do I use? Where do I put it?
Gigi,
There are some other examples in the comments where we have walked people through how to update the homepage layout a bit. I would recommend reading those and working towards what you need using them as a guide. If you’re not an experienced coder, it might be the kind of task you want to have a developer work on, as it is easy to leave out one little line of code that can make everything behave incorrectly. If you feel like doing it yourself though, feel free to go through the previous comments and locate the examples where we have described this process before.
Thanks!
Hi i’m using your theme Best. How do make the twitter above the footer work? Because it doesn’t yet. I did fill my username but nothing happens (also checked the box) thanx!
Robin,
Twitter recently changed their API to pull data through and it now involves a much more in depth verification process. This old version of the Twitter bar no loner works, but there are plenty of plugins available that will allow you to pull through your Twitter feed if needed.
Thanks!
Hi I’m having trouble using a child theme – I’ve done loads before without issue – but with this one the styles don’t seem to get called from child (even with !important) – was wondering if you have had this issue raised before – also the theme options do not work with latest WordPress version , i had to use WordPress-3.4.1 to get it to work – JavaScript issue i think – other than that – AWESOME THEME – NICE WORK!!!!! – any help would be appreciated
Daniel,
Thanks for your input on the theme. We’re glad that you’ve given it a go on your site! We’re aware of the child theme issue and are working on it. If you read through the other comments, you’ll see that this is something that we’ve known about for a while, but since the theme was merely meant for our own internal use and we decided to open source it, we never had much of a need for child theme compatibility. We’ll take a look into this soon as I believe we have pinpointed the issue. Additionally, it’s only in the tentative stages of planning right now, but we’re currently kicking around the idea of putting out a premium version of the Best WordPress Theme, so keep your eyes peeled for that!
Is there any chance of this theme getting updated? The last update was over a year ago.
Sara,
Best is a free theme offered up by Blogging Experiment as a little gift back to the WordPress community. Because of this, we cannot guarantee regular releases or updates. That being said, we are currently kicking around the idea of some potential updates, along with a premium theme release. Stay tuned to the site for more news, and thanks again for checking out the Best WordPress theme!
Widgets are not working. The only ones that work for me are the ones under main sidebar. None of the other ones work and yes I went in the widget area and added a bunch of them to test. Not a single one works.
We are currently using this theme on both our main site here at Blogging Experiment and on our demo install and are having no issues with widgets. There might be a conflict with a plugin that you are currently running on your site. Also, make sure you are placing your widgets in the right area so that they show up where you expect to see them. Thanks!
Hello, I have installed this theme but when I add widgets they don’t appear. Is there a bug with this theme?
Jonny,
We are using this exact theme for our Blogging Experiment, and on the Best demo site and have had no problems with adding widgets. Perhaps you are adding your widgets to the wrong widget area? Make sure you’re placing them in the right space so that they show up where you expect. Thanks for checking out the theme!
Hi there, everyone.
I´ve testing the best theme for a short time and i must say i love it. But i´m quite new to WordPress, and i have some doubts, particullary one, related to the widget row on home page. In the Demo i can se that the titles of the HTML widgets (i suppose they are html text widgets, maybe i´m wrong) “Beautiful Diesign” “Hand creafted Code” and “A quality theme” look great and they have links.
But… when i try to edit the code in the “Title” box of the widget i can´t save any changes, and they look quite a normal text, as you can see on my page.
Can any body please help me with that? the effect i´m looking for is quite the same as the one in the demo page.
This is probably a silly thing to question about, but, as i said, i´m quite newbie to WordPress, so, please, be indulgent ^^
Thanks a lot.
Sergio
Serglo,
Thanks for checking out the theme, we’re glad that you’re enjoying it! To achieve this look, we added the markup ourselves to the main content area of a standard text widget. The markup would appear like so:
<h3 class="widget-title h4"><a href="http://best.bloggingexperiment.com/download/">Beautiful Design</a></h3>
Hope this helps!
Hi there, love this theme! I’m new to wordpress so I apologize if my question seems silly. Is there a way to make the featured image in posts to all be uniform in size? Or should I resize images prior to uploading? And if so, what should the dimensions be? Thank you in advance!
