I am really excited about it and in fact have used it a couple of times just for kicks. I realize that catapults me to the top of the geek scale but as they say, simple pleasures for simple minds.

lord knows it certainly wasn’t difficult to go into the code view and type out the but it drove me absolutely crazy every time I had to do it. I think that’s mainly because I can’t understand why WP didn’t include that button along side the others up there in the left hand corner.

Instead of writing a long comment trying to explain why the *U* HTML tag isn’t available in the WordPress post editor, I suggest you to check out the Bad Tags | HTML Dog page. Since WordPress respects W3C guidelines, you won’t find it supporting any bad HTML tags.
