Posted by Ben Cook as Under the Microscope
Apparently my Under the Microscope posts from last week got some people’s attention because I’ve been receiving several more requests lately. Remember, if you’d like me to take a look at your blog or website, drop me an email. I won’t get to all of them but it’s worth a shot. Of course if you want to assure I cover your site, you can probably figure out a way to get my attention.. Anyway one of the sites that went that route was Laser-Toner.co.uk so here we are.
According to the about page,
“Laser Toner UK was one of the UK’s first online suppliers of high quality compatible inkjet and toner cartridges direct to businesses and the public. We now handle hundreds of thousands of orders every year and every customer is assured of a friendly welcome and that their purchase will be dispatched promptly.
Now, it’s been a while since I purchased any toner or inkjet cartridges but I do remember them being fairly expensive, especially if you have to buy them regularly. Fortunately, there are several stores and companies now that refill old cartridges making it much more affordable. Apparently Laser Toner UK is one of those companies that offers this type of toner cartridge for sale.
While the about page implies that Laser Toner UK has been online for quite some time, archive.org puts the age of the site at months, not years. On top of that, the site does absolutely nothing to inspire consumer confidence. While the home page is pretty simple and straight forward, it goes down hill quickly from there. After clicking on one of the Most popular brands, you’re greeted with a long list of toner cartridges. There are no pictures, no information about which printers they are compatible with, just a long list of links. Not only that, but a large majority of the links take you to a page that simply says there were no results found. I clicked around about 25 times before I actually found a page that actually listed a product for sale!
As if that weren’t bad enough, clicking on the Toner Refill button takes you to a page which promises toner refills for 75% off, but has only “Coming Soon” as the text. Brilliant. When I checked out the delivery info page, I had to scratch my head. The page claims “Order before 4.00PM Monday through Friday and we’ll deliver your printer cartridges for the next [working] day” of course they then qualify it with a quick “(please allow 1-2 working days for delivery).” Wait, what? Is it next working day delivery or isn’t it? Maybe this is a language difference (UK English vs. US English) but to me if you say next working day delivery it had better be at my home or office the next working day. I’m guessing they mean that they’ll fulfill and send out your order within one working day and then the actual shipping will take another day or two. While that might be a small mistake, it’s just the icing on the cake for this site.
So there you have it. Any readers from across the pond, I wouldn’t suggest using Laser-Toner.co.uk for your ink needs. They might in fact be a quality company, but their website doesn’t reflect that at all and as they’ll see from this review, you only get one chance to make a first impression online.

1i recently had to replace the toner for my samsung ml2150. i considered refilling the cartridge through “cartridge world” but found that for a few more dollars i could buy a new, genuine samsung replacement from provantage.com - tax free.

3SEO blog, of my last 10 posts the microscope posts consist of 3 of them. 2 more were Friday Phrase auctions, 1 gave away a prize, and 4 of them dealt with blogging or making money blogging. Also, one of the microscope posts came on a day that I had already made a post, and this one was published on a Sunday (something I don’t normally do). That seems fairly reasonable doesn’t it?

There are things to be learned from under the microscope. Ben has an extensive background in SEO and has been around web design professionals doing a little of the work himself. I think that we can all learn more about our sites by looking at the critiques of other sites as well.
If that’s not making sense, what I’m trying to get across is that we can improve our own sites by looking at other sites and observing what may or may not work well for them. With that in mind, I think that the Under the Microscope bits carry their own value in regards to online income and blogging.

5That certainly appears like an honest review, despite the fact that you say they paid for the review (presumably at the listed cost of US$100), you’ve basically trashed them.
Whilst I didnt check the site in the same detail you did, I thought finding the cartridge I might need was fairly simple using the search by printer brand (and model) option which is how I guess most people would search.
Clearly the site needs work and you pointed out several valid areas where that is the case.
All in all a nice job Ben.

6Dear Ben:
An interesting review and on target.
Our goal when we developed the first “Refill It Yourself” and save toner refill kit web site (over ten years ago) was the customer had to be able to find the ReChargX-brand premium print toner refill kit used to refill their cartridge in three clicks.
If you go to our web site (www.TonerRefillKits.com) you will see our “Fast Find” box in the upper left hand corner. When a prospective customer scrolls through the list to find the manufacturer of their machine, they click on it (1st click).
That click will bring them to the cross reference page for their brand. Scrolling through that list, when they find their machine’s model number, they click on the blue hyperlink to the right of their machine and that brings them directly to the page that will bring their “empty, not broken” cartridge back to life - guaranteed (2nd click).
We didn’t find a reason to have a third click…
Again, an interesting review.

7John, if I may say so, the TonerRefillKits.com is a much better site than the one you asked me to review. That looks like a professional estore where the other looked like an estore that was in the process of being built or something. When searching the Laser-Toner.co.uk site I kept running into pages like this one http://laser-toner.co.uk/shop/.....EROX%20C55
To me when you combined that with the Coming Soon on the Toner Refills page, it just looked at best unfinished. Since you’ve already got a Refill Kit site, why not just add a link over to the other store on that page? It would at least let people know that you’ve been doing this stuff for quite a while and know what you’re doing.
Anyway, I hope the review helped, and yeah, that’s my wife in the pic with me. I’m not sure how I pulled that one off but I’m smart enough not to question my good fortune
EDIT: I misunderstood and did not realize that John was not the owner of both sites.

8Hey Ben,
It was just my impression, and maybe because I kinda like the name of your blog my expectations for a moment were on experiments about blogging, but it kinda got shaded the fact that the experiment is money. Sorry again
No heart feelings, i was not bashing you or something. The amount is reasonable 3 of 10 in the homepage, what made it look like too much that most of the microscope posts were the latest ones. i know money is good
Actually inkjet is what I am in need of right now, but I can’t seem to find if they charge extra for shipment (i’ll email them in any case) but wonder it would cost me less buying in the local area.

9Here is my $.02. First let me preface with I HATE refilled toner/ink cartridges. I have been burned one to many times by these so called refilled cartridges. The one thing these companies do not tell you is that on ink cartridges, if you run them to long with no ink or a little ink it actually burns out the print head, so no matter how much ink you put in it, it will never print. Here is a little bit of my advice, by new genuine cartridges, you will pay more, but you will be almost guaranteed they will work. Selling refilled toner/ink cartridges is like selling snake oil, the proof is never in the pudding.

11Dear Ben,
I have recently ordered ink cartridges from Laser Toner.co.uk,(previously The Ink Shop, same address)No items have yet been delivered and the two telephone numbers on their site just ring and ring.Do you think this company is in trouble.I have informed the Office of Fair Trading but they advise taking the company to the small claims court. I’d appreciate your views, thanks

12Ron, yikes, that’s certainly no fun. I don’t really have any views on it, I’m certainly not a lawyer. Good luck mate.
