Trying Out This Twitter Thing

When I see several people that I look up to, all doing the same thing, I tend to try and follow along. Call me impressionable but I figure if people like Donna, Darren, Andy, and Andy are all on Twitter, I probably should be to.

I still have no real idea on what exactly this beast is, or how to use it to benefit my site but I figured hey, why not right? As best I can tell, you are supposed to follow your friends around so if anyone would like to follow me, my user name is BlogEx. I should have it set up to alert me if or when you follow me but you might want to drop me a comment here just to make sure. Since Twitter is all about keeping things short, I’ll end the post here, but don’t worry, this won’t be my only one today and I’ll post more on Twitter when I feel like I actually know what I’m doing.

  1. I think the way it really benefits you is if you have lots of people following you. Then your posts show up on their list as well as yours. You should also follow those that follow you.

Then there are also places that will subscribe to your feed, and then twitter whenever you make a new post. That post then goes to whom ever is following you. Very easy! :)

  2. Hi Ben – I’ve got as far as signing up. But, I’m not exactly sure what I’m doing yet. I will try to suss it out tomorrow and have a go at following you. Then at least I will have someone else to blame if I get lost.

  3. I resisted signing up for Twitter for a long time but about a month ago I signed up to try it out. I guess it’s supposed to be sort of like people standing around the water cooler at work and people feel more connected to other people who are ‘tweeting’ without having the commitment of an IM conversation.

To me, it’s just another way I can waste too much time so I stay away from it most of the time. I guess if you build up a pretty large list of people who were following you that you could get some traffic out of it when you post something interesting. Would be interested to hear how it works out for you :)

  4. Haha, it’s a deal Catherine but it’s going to be the blind leading the blind I think.

  5. Well I recently signed up for this as well, and will be following you. Not quite sure what its use is though other than a glorified status bar on an Instant messenger client?

  6. I didn’t get it at first either but I am glad a little while ago I gave it a second chance, now I am encouraging everyone to give it a try like a mad man. I’ve written at length all over the place about how to use it but the very best approach is to dive in like you have done. See you on Twitter ;)

  7. A lot of people seem to think that Pownce is a better alternative to Twitter. Twitter does have lots of limitations whereas Pownce has flexibility. The only thing you cannot do with Pownce that you can with Twitter, as far as I know, is to pipe in an RSS feed…

  8. The main difference is Twitter is where the conversations are. Pownce is pretty dead in comparison as far as I can tell? Pownce has better technology, no question, especially recently when the Macworld keynote took twitter down

  9. You could well be right. I guess it also depends on what friends you have on each. I get more useful pownces than tweets these days.

  10. I did not like twitter mush as it was not to useful for my blog.

  11. I’m still trying to figure out Twitter myself. All the recent talk finally got me to take a look after insisting for a long time I didn’t care what you were doing right now and wondering why you would care what I’m doing right now.

I can see the potential benefit even while still trying to figure it all out and have a feeling I’m going to be addicted pretty soon if I’m not already addicted.

Now hopefully I can figure out how to make interesting tweets.

  12. Ben I’m horrified, how can you talk about Twitter and not mention my cool guide? :-) Hehe, seriously check it out, I’m going to do something I don’t usually do and drop a link here:

    http://www.caroline-middlebrook.com/blog/twitter-guide/

The guide is all about using Twitter for marketing so you should find it useful.

  13. Twitter is a waste of time.

  14. Totally feel the same way. It seemed like a complete waste of time, but is actually nice for those little thoughts during the day. Full-on blog posts take too much time, so it’s nice to not have to throw away the one-off comments.

I just wish people would think a little more creatively than just answering the question “What are you doing right now?” Folks on Facebook seem to be able to tackle that question a little less literally. That doesn’t seem to have happened yet on Twitter.
