Can you believe this blog has been around for 4 months already? It really doesn’t seem like it’s been that long. The calender doesn’t lie though, and neither does my countdown clock. I have exactly 245 days left to accomplish my goal of earning a full time income from this blog. Last month I made only $75.00 which wasn’t very impressive for a make money online blog, but this month I kicked it into high gear. I introduced several different advertising options, had a good month for affiliate referrals, and even participated in a paid study. So, did this month’s income reflect all that extra work?
You better believe it.
This month’s income came in at a greatly improved $595.00. While that is still only about 10% of the way towards my monthly goal, it also represents nearly an 800% increase over last month’s total! To put that into a bit of perspective if I were somehow able to maintain that rate of growth, I’d be 4/5ths of the way to my goal by the end of next month. Now obviously I’m not saying I’ll be able to even come close to that for November, it just illustrates just how big of a step I took in October.
So, where did it all come from? The breakdown looks like this:
Obviously I’m not going to be able to do the Goodmind Study again each month so I’m going to have to either generate more affiliate sales, recruit more private advertisers, or develop even more ways to make money blogging just to keep up with October’s earnings. However, I’ve never been one to back down from a good challenge so for this month my goal is going to be $1000 or a “modest” 67% increase over October. Wish me luck!

1Ben, that sounds great. A good percentage increase over last month but the traffic rankings look almost better than the revenue. I did a search for “goodmind study” and this post was first on the list, and you just published the post. I would say that is fast indexing.
Good luck next month. Scott

2Hey Ben,
As you probably know, I’ve followed this blog since its inception. Just wanted to say I think you provide great info and perspective. It’s nice to see someone who’s so honest and open about their efforts. Keep up the good work and I’m sure you’ll reach your goals.

3I was going to suggest another contest to try to drive your subscribers to 500 but today you’re almost there! Maybe it’s time to shoot for 1,000!

4@ Jason, thanks! I’m glad I can be of service.
@ Pops, that number is inflated by the Your Blog Might Suck article hitting the front page of Digg. It will probably drop back down tomorrow, but I’m hoping not below the 400 mark. Another contest is in the works but it’s not going to focus on the RSS number…. I’ll leave it at that for a bit of a teaser. I’m just trying to sort out the prizes now.

5I pre-quailifed for the good-mind study (phone interview) and then never heard from the guy again. Or I deleted the follow-up email by accident.

6@ Steve, that actually almost happened to me. It got caught in a filter but I happened to notice it since I gave them an email that doesn’t get much mail usually. I wonder how many other people that happened to. I figured it was just due to the way I have rules set up on my comp, otherwise I would have warned everyone to check their spam folders.

7Congrats Ben! It’s great to see blogs of any size are selling ads privately now. By the way, I’ve been your reader since your first month and it’s really nice to see the growth of such a great blog. Keep it up Ben and I wish you luck for the future

8@ Ben, great job this month, I am working on a project for my side computer business that may need to enlist the help of the blogging experiment if you are interested.
@ Steve, that sucks you missed out it was an easy way to make a cool $150. I was part of it (thanks BloggingExperiment.com) and it was super simple I am hoping they will ask me again.

9Wow very nice growth indeed. My income was exactly $0 for October, need to fix that
One word about the advertising though - quite a lot of your recent posts have been dominated by advertising related stuff since you released your innovative option. Make sure you don’t crowd out your other good content.
Anyway well done and good luck for next month!

11Caroline, that’s a good point and something that every make money online blogger needs to be cognizant of. I wonder if perhaps I should switch the auctions over to once a month and make it an event of sorts?

12Ok, wish you luck!
Just teasing. You have done a great job just for a 4 months old blog. Well done and keep pushing it further.
Btw, which affiliates have performed best for you?

13@ SEO blog, really the only two affiliate offers that have made me much of anything have been Text Link Ads and SEO Book. I would like to diversify that a bit but I have no problem standing behind or supporting those two.

14Great work Ben! Thats awesome. May I ask. Are the numbers you report taking into account any costs? In better terms - is that profit or income? Regardless - it’s a great number and congrats on the increase!

15@knupNET, really I haven’t had any costs for this blog yet. The redesign was done by Pops for free (in exchange for the link at the bottom) and my hosting is actually just a reseller account that I already had and is already paid for each month.
However, my post about treating your blog like a business should give you a hint that next month I’ll have more expenses and I’ll be sure to list those out as well. Great question.

16hi Ben, I am amazed that TLA has worked for you. For me it never worked, had sent a heap of traffic but no conversation while seo book has done ok to be honest not much conversation but it worked well.
In any case, I wish you all the best to hit the 1k mark in this month.

17Well, you might need to consider the audience as well. I mean if I let people know that I’ve been making good money from a certain source, chances are this crowd will at least check it out you know?

18Here’s a suggestion to make some additional legit money from the blog. On2’s affiliate program. They’re the backbone to the flash video world. I admit, i might be a little biased as my wife works there, but rest assured, neither of us would get anything if you went ahead and tossed the affiliate link on there. She told me about a guy making over $700 a month using it, so it’s something to look into!

20Thanks Paul! It’s been fun and hopefully I’ll be able to keep improving month to month. So far November has started out well, it will be interesting to see if it continues at this pace.

21Ben,
What are your stats looking like? Uniques etc? Also what affiliates are you using and what is your CTR? Just curious. I have been blogging about the same amount of time you have and I am just up to the $25/mo range. I did start a contest series on Fridays and I noticed that my weekend traffic hasn’t dropped off as much. Anyway, good job on the blog. I read it every day.
Later!

22Andy, October I had about 31,000 page views from about 21,000 visitors. To be honest I don’t really keep a good eye on CTR for the affiliate ads. I do know I send a couple hundred of visits to TLA a month and the conversions have been anywhere from 1 to 8 (last month).
As you can see, private advertising has really been the biggest money maker for me and that trend looks to be continuing this month as well.
