If time flies when you’re having fun, I must be having a blast. It seems like just last week that I was figuring up the income for October but alas, the calendar doesn’t lie. Last month I made $595 and set a goal for this month of $1,000. So, did I make it?
Not quite.
For the month of November I made $556.50 from the following sources:
Affiliate Sales: $45.00
Private Advertising: $245.00
Sponsored Reviews: $266.50
Early in the month I was on a frantic pace and was on track to exceed the $1k goal for this month. So what happened? As best I can tell, a couple of factors combined to bring the numbers back to earth. First and foremost, Google removed all of this site’s PageRank. Originally I wasn’t all that concerned about the effect that would have on my income. In fact, I wrote:
Obviously I won’t be able to use PageRank as a selling point for any advertising, but I think my Technorati and Alexa along with my traffic numbers should be enough to allow me to march on toward my goal of a full time income.
While it’s only been a couple of weeks, it certainly appears I underestimated the value advertisers place on income. While my private ad sales have not diminished (in fact, the 125 x 125 ad spots have sold out for the first time), the number of Sponsored Reviews has decreased noticeably. As I mentioned, it is still too early to tell for sure whether PageRank is the driving force behind the drop but let’s just say it’s my prime suspect so far.
The other most notable change has been the drop in my affiliate earnings. Last month I made $200.00 in affiliate commissions. A large chunk of that was through Text Link Ads’ affiliate program. And while I sent roughly 75% the traffic over to TLA as I did last month, according to their affiliate stats, not a single one of those referrals converted. A large part of that could also be due to Google’s war on paid links but I’ve also lost confidence in Text Link Ads’ affiliate program. As I mentioned last month, they had trouble accurately reporting the number of new clients and publishers I had referred. It was only after several emails to their support team that I finally saw numbers that I thought were accurate. Needless to say, the fact no referrals were reported for this month hasn’t done anything to help TLA’s standing in my eyes. As a result I’ve removed the affiliate button and will look for other programs to promote.
Also playing a large role in the drop in affiliate commissions is the fact that I didn’t promote affiliate products or services much in November. As discussed last week, I struggled managing the blog when pressed for time and unfortunately, affiliate promotions was one of the areas that suffered.
Don’t get me wrong, despite the negatives I just covered, this blog still earned $556.50 in income for the month. That means some sources had to have performed well right? Absolutely.
Sponsored Reviews became the #1 source of income for the blog despite tailing off drastically over the last two weeks. They also launched their affiliate program this month which is one more possible source of income considering I’ve already earned 4 referrals over the first two weeks it’s been active. Also, direct or private advertising continued to perform well and looks to be picking up steam heading into December.
So where do I go from here? For the month of December I’m setting the same goal that I failed to meet this month. I’m shooting for $1,000 in income. As mentioned earlier, I’ve already sold more 125 x 125 ads than last month and starting next Friday, I’ll have another product to promote… BloggingExperiment’s very own custom theme! Hopefully that will help off set any income I might lose due to having no Google PageRank. While I have 7 months left, I’ll need to continued growth in terms of income if I’m going to achieve the goal of this experiment.
What about you? How did November’s income stack up? Did you notice any drop in your income as a result of the recent controversy surrounding Google Page Rank and the sale of links? Please share your thoughts and results in the comments below.

2Every great plan has it’s bad days. As you said you were on a frantic pace and the fact you still earned a profit amidst the chaos is still GREAT.

3$500 still isn’t too shabby. It sucks that Google took away your PR though. On the bright side you could potentially live of $500 a month…..well probably not. G’luck on your goals for this month

4@ Adam, $500 a month definitely is handy but with a wife and a mortgage I’m certainly not going to be able to live off it lol.

5Don’t worry Ben, these things shouldn’t even ding you at all. You’re already inspiring all of us by conducting this experiment and you’re doing a WONDERFUL job. Good luck to you, I’m sure you DO NOT need it

8Do you have kids yet? That blackhole is even larger. (Just kidding. Children and a good wife are all a man needs.) Good luck with December. I’m sure you’ll do well.

9Ben, what about setting a smaller goal that you need to reach? Not that it would really make a difference, but getting a smaller goal and getting close, reaching or overpassing it will build your self esteem and motivate you to reach a higher goal.
$550 from one blog is yet not bad and I believe you could still do much better. Unfortunately the PR will influence the earnings if the audience that wants to buy from you are the PR juice hunters. Try to concentrate the sales from another stand point, maybe traffic. As you know I bid on the word SEO mainly because of the traffic it would bring and if that link drives the traffic I think it should, I will subscribe for that word
(if you just started blogging daily as you used to before).

11@ Seoblog, I only blog on weekdays and have only missed I think two days not including major holidays since the experiment got started (one of them being my 1 year anniversary).
@ Angel, congrats mate! Is that from one blog or overall? All together I made just a hair over 1k this month but that was from 3 blogs, not just this one like I had hoped.

12You still earned a good deal and thing to remember is, your monthly earnings will only increase over time. Continuing to build a site or blog proves to be very valuable after a while, especially if you don’t put all your eggs in one basket!

13You mentioned that you use/used the TLA referral program, but not TLA sponsored link ads (which always seemed like “easy” revenue to me). Is there a reason for that?

14Good Job, Ben.
$500 in the pocket is better than none.
Do you combine your income for all blogs/sites or is this amount just for this blog?
The reasons I ask is because I didn’t read much sponsered reviews on this blog, but yet it is the largest earner.
Or you have written your review extremely well that I can’t diff from your normal post.

15@ Joe, it was mostly because the price they wanted to charge for a link here was too low due to my PageRank. When I did finally get PageRank, it didn’t last very long so I just haven’t used it here. I do use them on other sites I own and make a decent amount per month off it, especially considering a lot of the ads are on my Abandoned Blogs.
@ Bmunch, the $550 is only from this blog. I think you can probably pick out the sponsored reviews if you tried really hard but I’ll be spilling the beans in a post set to go live later today. Good to know I’ve blended them in well though

16For my day job, I run a commercial site with very high traffic. We’ve tried many of the things you have, including just about every affiliate program under the sun, but the best performer has always been good old Google AdSense. We keep AdSense off the part of the site where we sell stuff and just populate the free content pages with it, and it never ceases to amaze me how well it turns over, month after month.

18Matthew, in the “what went well” part of the post I mention that I’m already using the SR aff program and that I’ve already had a few signups, although I’m definitely hoping for more this month. While it’s only $5 for bloggers I refer, it can be more if I manage to refer some advertisers.

19TLA is a program that is going into the toilet very quickly. I’ve been recommending LinkXL (not affiliated) for quite some time now because I’ve been seeing great results with them. None of the sites of which I sell links through LinkXL have received any G penalties either.
Good job and best of luck increasing your income this month.
