Posted by Max Davis as Site News
Hey there, this is Max Davis. I’m sure you’ve heard by now that Ben has sold his amazing website and many of you are interested to see what is going to happen next. I’ve read the comments from everyone asking who the new owner is, what’s the future of Blogging Experiment, etc, so this post will hopefully answer those questions…
First, a little about me…
I am an entrepreneur who has been making a full time income online over the last 5 years. I specialize in search engine optimization, pay per click marketing, monetizing websites and traffic generation strategies.
My partner (who actually purchased this website) and I work together on projects that we think have lots of potential. He tends to lay low, out of the spotlight, but he specializes in buying and selling websites. I take the websites he purchases to the next level.
For example, the last website we worked on, we purchased for under $10,000, and less than 14 months later, we sold the same website for $575,000. We’ve also started websites from scratch and sold them a year later for $100k and another for $55k. That’s what we’ve been working on over the last 2 years.
I’m not saying this to brag, I just want to let you know that Blogging Experiment is in good hands ; )
This is our first project in the “make money” market. All of our other sites have been in REAL niche markets, selling REAL products to REAL people.
In fact, up until 5 days ago, I’ve never even heard of John Chow, Steve Pavlina, Darren Rowse, or any of those guys. Is that a bad thing? I don’t know them so I can’t judge. In reality, I’m probably more like you than any big guru. I don’t have any advantages because I hang with the “big dogs”.
You might find it interesting that I was actually a cable man working for $8.50 per hour just six years ago (I quit that job on March 18, 2002). Fast forward 5 years later, and in 2007, where I made well over half a million dollars online. Amazing how fast life can change, hopefully I help you do the same thing with your life through this website…
I have some big ideas for Blogging Experiment, so I hope you stick around to see what’s in store. We’ve asked Ben to stick around for at least another few months, which he agreed. So aside from my tidbits of wisdom, you get more great content from “the man” himself.
I’ve spent the last 3 days researching all the other make money blogs out there to see what I’m up against. I did see a few great websites with valuable content (like Caroline’s, Bill’s, and Mike’s sites and a couple others, sorry if I didn’t list you here).
But the other thing I noticed is there are a lot more sites in this niche that are not so great. I won’t name names here, but I’m sure you know who they are. Some of these sites just write rehashed nonsense they read from someone else’s blog yesterday. Some of these sites try every trick in the book to squeeze pennies out of their visitors, which I find pretty annoying. They are more like flashing billboards in your face than a valuable resource.
That’s not my style…
Here’s how this blog is going to change over the next few weeks, months, years…
BloggingExperiment.com is about making money online. But, it IS NOT ABOUT ME making money online, it’s about YOU MAKING MONEY. Who cares if I make $30,000 per month with this website? That doesn’t help you, does it?
Sure, I’ll be monetizing the site in a few ways, but nothing like the annoying methods I’ve seen on other sites. We do have a significant investment in this website to recoup, so this blog will eventually have to make a few bucks ?
First, I feel the need to “prove myself” to you by providing enormous amounts of value, which is exactly what I’ll be doing. But at the same time, I don’t want to bore you with just money making lessons like some college course (I hated school). That’s why I’m going to have lots of interactive games and contests to keep things exciting.
You may be surprised to see the changes that will be made, and I’ll be sharing with you the reasons I made these changes in future posts. Some of the major changes to come are:
- Removing the 125 x 125 blog ads.
- No more “paid reviews”.
- Some layout changes.
- Adding lots of contests giving away REAL prizes & cash.
- Paying YOU for simply reading the blog.
One of my first lessons, if you want to call them that, is probably the number one reason I see people fail to make money online…copying other people rather than innovating. (another reason why I’m removing a lot of the “copied” techniques from this site)…
I wonder how long it will be before THIS site starts getting copied??? We’ll see I guess.
So, that’s a little bit about me and my plan for Blogging Experiment. Of course this plan can change based on what you would like to see on this site. I’d love to hear your “vision” for this site, so send me your ideas and I’ll try my best to make it happen…
Feel free to leave a comment if you have any questions/concerns for me or to just say hi.

1Hi Max,
First of all, welcome, and congrats on your purchase. I wish you the best as you take this blog from here to where you want it to be.
I’d like to start off positive with saying that I like where you want to take things conceptually and I think that you can do great things whith the platform that Ben has built.
There is a good “family” of readers here and while the blog is not perfect, be it ever so humble there’s no place like home. What I mean by that is, you came off a little rough in your post. For those of us who are long time fans of the site, and of what Ben has been doing, to come in and immediately point out what’s wrong and to call things “copied” may not be putting your best foot forward.
I wanted to get this out here as soon as possible to let you know that some might find that offensive.
That being said, I think that you have a great concept here and I for one will enjoy watching what you can do with it.
Cheers,
Tim

3Hi Max, welcome!
I’m happy to read your first post on here and I must say, you did a very good job at it. I’m very much looking forward to the changes you announce and I’m interested in seeing how the blog develops.
I also want to take the chance to thank Ben for his commitment over the past months. Ben started this blog from scratch and brought it up. Good job, Ben! Good times… Well, I’m very much looking forward to hearing about your next project(s) soon.
Max, you’re making a very good start already in my opinion, with an exciting mixture of just the right amount and type of polarizing information. It wouldn’t surprise me to see this blog grow rapidly. I’m going to stick around for sure!
Regards,
Robert Augustin

5Cracking welcoming post and it looks like the website is in good hands. I will keep an eye on this, let’s hope it doesn’t go the same way as Cashquests…

7Thanks for the warm welcome everyone…
@ Tim - I agree after re-reading the post that it sorta sounded rough. Didn’t mean it to come out that way. I love the foundation that this blog has and the content already shared. Ben has done a great job with it so far. In my next post I’ll elaborate on the “copying pet peeve” I have.
@ HMTKSteve - 30 days? I’ll have you hooked within a week
Just kidding. Re: buying mode, let me get my hands around this project before getting anymore distracted. Let me know what you have to sell via the contact form because I have a few friends that buy & sell sites also.
@ Jason - Luckily I so new to this market I don’t know what CashQuests is or did wrong. Care to share their mistakes so I don’t do the same thing?
@Cuzzy, Nublo, Terry - Looking forward to getting to know you more…

8Certainly sounds interesting and promising. CashQuests was big make money online blog that sold for 10k or more and then as soon as it was in the new owner’s hands it lost pretty much everything and now is not much of a player in the make money online niche. But, sounds like you know what you’re doing so best of luck!

9Firstly welcome to bloggingexperiment.com. I hope you enjoy working on the site and wish you luck for the future.
However I must say I agree with Tims comment on being very rough so-to-speak, we all love what Ben has done with the site and the fact he has been humble and often takes things back to basic.
Lastly you mentioned you would be removing stuff you felt was copied. Personally I think this will be a bad move. this is for 2 reasons. 1, I don’t believe anything has been copied, and whilst the techniques maybe copied, the way ben has explained these techniques and how to apply them provides real value to readers, and that’s why us guys are subscribed.
My second reason is for SEO purposes. You said your speciality is SEO, however by removing content which is already indexed would seriously not be a good move. Why remove valuable and indexed content? I don’t get that, and urge you to rethink that decision as in my own opinion, you will be making a mistake.
Please don’t take this comment as me wanting to be negative, because I think you will do fantastic things with the site, and judging by how much money you have made, you clearly have a lot of knowledge and it will be great for us guys to learn some of that, I just think some of the decisions you have made may be the wrong approach.
Good luck with everything.

10@ Andy - Ah, maybe that’s where I was being confusing. I won’t be removing any CONTENT from this site. I was referring to the 125×125 ads, some layout issues that can be tweaked to free up the most valuable parts of any website (above the fold).
For example, the 125×125 ads were taking up almost all of the visible part of the screen, even though those ads were making less than 10% of the site’s total income. That’s a waste of valuable “real estate”. I’ll explain more in a post tomorrow.
You’ll notice I’ve already reduced the header section, making the logo and everything in that section smaller. Those are the kinds of things I meant would be changed. I agree, removing the content wouldn’t be a very smart idea.
Hope this clarifies…

11Tim - I love the post and I couldn’t agree with you more. I for one rather than being “offended” by anything you have written, am intrigued to see what you are up to.
I would advise most of those who are “offended” to lighten up and recognize that he’s 100 percent right. It’s not a slam on Ben to say that his blog (and most of our blogs) tend to look a lot a like and try to monetize the same way.
Relax, sit back and let’s see what Max has to say. If he’s making tens of thousands of dollars a month online and the blog was making less than 2k a month before then you seriously should want to hear what he has to say.
That’s my 2 cents and by the way thanks for the mention and the kind words. I appreciate it and let me know if I can help in any way.

12Hi Max,
Thanks for the swift response. that is a good thing already. Well your response certainly clarifies it and im happy about that, sorry that i got the wrong end of the stick. Its just the following line in your article i thought pointed to you removing copied content.
“another reason why I’m removing a lot of the “copied” techniques from this site”
Anyways thanks for clearing it up and i wish you the very best of luck with the site. It seems you have your head screwed on and i look forward to seeing the sites development over the coming weeks and months.

13@Bill
I presume you were directing that at me. I never at any point have said im offended, i just voiced my opinion, and lets face it, the blogosphere is about people voicing opinions, or am i missing the point?? I merely said that there is valuable content here and it would be a shame for him to delete the content because of the fact the techniques were ‘copied’ so-to-speak.
If you look at both of my comments, i quite clearly state that i am very happy for Max to have purchased the site, and am really quite excited to see what he does with it next. I also went on to say, “It seems you have your head screwed on and i look forward to seeing the sites development over the coming weeks and months.” I merely pointed out a fact that deleting content that 1, is already indexed and 2, provides real value to the user would be a poor business decision.

15Hi Max,
Wow, what a great introduction! I look forward to seeing the changes that you will bring to this website.
I have a website (my first) that I have been thinking about monetizing (beyond Adsense). I hope to learn from you, and then not copy your ideas, but maybe use them as inspiration.

16@ Lane - Great looking site. Have you tried doing a “product review” for a Vegan ebook like this one I just found?
http://www.therawdiet.com/ebook.html
I found it on clickbank. You can signup as an affiliate and it pays $10 per sale I believe.
That would be my first step. Find out if a product of this type will sell. If it does, then you can either keep promoting that ebook as an affiliate, or you can write your own product and keep all the profit for yourself.
There are lots of opportunities in your market, from recipes, ebooks, membership sites, special health reports, adsense, etc.
Just keep adding value to that blog like what I’m seeing right now and you’ll do well.

19Max;
It’ll be very interesting to see how it all plays out. I wish you a lot of luck. I stumbled upon this website WAY early in the experiment, sometime in September I believe. I had no knowledge of blogging at that point, and I just knew I wanted make some serious attempts at making money online.
Although I am not making thousands yet, Ben’s advice has helped me to this point make at least a couple hundred a month on a few different websites, and I continue to build those sites.
I’m sure you will lose some readers at the start, but sometimes you need to make a small step back to make a giant leap forward.
Best of luck, I will continue to read and support the Blogging Experiment.
Cheers!

23“Sure, I’ll be monetizing the site in a few ways, but nothing like the annoying methods I’ve seen on other sites.”
And yet you say you plan on getting rid of the 125×125 ads. 125s are one of the least annoying forms of advertising in existence. We’re webmasters, so you can pretty much forget making any money from AdSense, and sorry, the kind of banners you see on sites like Wired.com are very annoying. Unless you have some new and unproven form of advertising up your sleeves, you don’t want to get rid of the 125×125 ads.
I figured someone had to say that…

24What we all want to know is how much did you pay for this site.
This information is crucial if you want readers to stay around. It shows transparency and gives us an idea of your level of “investment”.
Moreover, the title of this blog is “experiment” which is what Ben did with some success and some failures.
Ben sold because he would no longer be able to hit his targets. The blog design was looking tired and he was running out of reviews to do (and they put off readers).
You have bought “RSS eyeballs” - what part of the experiment do you intend to continue with?
If we know how much you paid then we will know whether this new “experiment” for you makes or loses you money.

25Max, welcome, I personally will hang around and see where you take the blog. While I always appreciated Ben and his approach, people who think that a new owner is going to be exactly like the old owner are always setting themselves up for a bit of disappointment.
This goes if we are talking about a restaurant or a website. Each owner is different and can see potential, but in different ways. This is good.
I don’t expect things to stay the same, and I don’t blame you at all for wanting to make it your own, but, readers, are sometimes fickle… I am sure you can expect to loose a certain number in the end, but you will gain some new readers as well, just the way it goes.
You bought it, its your blog, do what you want to with it (as I am sure you will). I am glad to hear that Ben is going to stick around for a while and work with you on the content. I know he has put his heart into writing day after day and it is nice to know he will be around a bit longer.
Best of luck to you, look forward to seeing what is ahead. Scott

26Thanks for the feedback…
@ redwall_hp - Please checkout today’s post to see my thoughts on this.
@ China - Ben already shared the site was sold for 5 figures, that’s pretty transparent. One day I’ll likely share exact figures, but does it really matter (aside from inquiring minds wanting to know)? I’ll put together a post soon that explains WHY we decided to buy this site, it’s not just RSS eyeballs, that’s for sure.
Your comment makes it sounds like you thought Ben’s experiment was a failure. To me, it was a raging success. If you were making $9.00/hour at your job, the $1500/month this website makes right now is a full time income for you. Ben’s goal was to go from $0 to a full time income, which is what he did.
@ Scott - completely agree with everything you said. I will have a different style than Ben no doubt. If you do the exact thing as someone else, you can expect the same results they were getting. My goal is to take this to the next level, so obviously some things will be changing.

27Welcome Max, I like the angle and ideas you have. Grats on the purchase and looking forward to see what the future lies. I received 0 sales from my $30 dollars spent advertising on this site. So I have a bit of bad taste in my mouth. Or maybe it is just an idea that is not going to catch on…..One of these days a crazy idea will though!

28There is a big difference between $10,000 and $99,999 when it comes to assessing how well your purchase does.
I happen to believe that whilst not a failure, the “blogging experiment” was never had a sustainable business model.
Selling is admitting that it failed. It obviosuly become clear that the previous owner was not able to make this business sustainable in the long term. He therefore front loaded teh reviews and picked the low hanging fruit to boost his bottom line figures.
Sales of the “theme” were also falling and it is not repeat business.
I believe you have bought a lemon and that you could have bought a similar theme or eyeballs a lot cheaper. Given you develop websites you surely didn’t buy this for the theme alone.
It will therefore be interesting to watch how you progress from here in terms of RSS and income. I believe this to be a poor investment but how poor depends on how much you spent which for some reason you seem reluctant to tell us. I am still not sure why as it goes against the ethos of this being an “experiment”.
Scott Sweeney
March 30th, 2008 at 7:04 am
29@China
I hardly would consider this website a lemon. 50,000 Alexa ranking? The profit he made in less than 9 months? A lemon? Sure it isn’t making as much at other sites but come on. A lemon? Have you read the stats and traffic reports?
Selling it doesn’t show it failed, it shows he can use his resources (whatever they are, whether it was manual labor, songwriting, blogging whatever) to make MORE money than he is with the blogging experiment. That doesn’t mean it failed.
You feel the new owner made a bad choice, how about you give it some time before you say that.
When did you start following this blog China? If you have been around since near the beginging like I have, I would venture to say you’d hardly find this a failure.
Cheers!

30Hi Max, good to see you starting off on a positive note. I look forward to seeing what you do with the blog. One thing that I wouldn’t mind seeing is a photo in the about section of the header. Not to sound creepy or anything, but I just think you’ll be able to relate to your readers a lot better that way.
I look forward to discussing your future posts

32Hi Max,
I would like to you to tell us about your way of making money online. Like the process you followed on purchasing a site for 10K and selling 14 months later for 575K. That would make a great case study series.
I am looking to transition from off line businesses to online ones. I want the freedom of being completely mobile. However I am not yet internet savvy.
Would you recommend someone like myself find a partner who is internet savvy or just jump in and hire programmers / designers as needed?
