Not long after we put the Blogging Experiment Theme up for sale, it became obvious to me that we needed to set up an affiliate program to allow other people to sell it as well. We get more sales, and the affiliates get to make money selling a product without having to create it or distribute it. Really it’s a win win situation.
However, setting up an affiliate program is apparently much easier said than done. There are all sorts of things to consider that I had never even thought of such as tax information, security of the affiliates’ personal information, etc. etc. Also, we needed an automated system to deliver the themes rather than the manual process we’d been using. So, I began looking around at different affiliate programs and software and none seemed to fit. Some of them had the functionality, but they took a fairly large cut of each sale. Naturally none of the cheaper options had the functionality we needed.
That is until a friend mentioned e-junkie.com.
For $5.00 a month, E-Junkie allows you to create an affiliate program using their system. You simply sign up, upload your product files (in our case the themes), configure a few options (the % you’ll pay affiliates etc) and just like that you’re done. Not only that, they also offer a basic shopping cart and automated delivery of digital products! You’re even able to set up coupons or special deals to use when marketing your products. Basically, it did everything I wanted, and only costs $5.00 a month. With that in mind, I’d like to formally announce the creation of…
Basically, you sign up as an affiliate using this link, and you’ll automatically be given an affiliate ID and links to place on your website. When you refer someone that purchases the theme, you’ll receive an email notifying you of the sale so you can track it throughout the month. Each month’s earnings will be made via PayPal within 15 days of month’s end. So for example, if you sign up today (hint hint) and generate several sales over the course of the month, you’ll be paid for those sales no later than the middle of March.
Ok, ok, yes I realize I haven’t told you much the affiliate payment is yet. I wanted to make sure you read all the details and understood everything about the program. For each theme that is sold through your affiliate link, you’ll receive 33.34% of the sales price ($25.005)! If you refer someone that buys the original as well as the green variation, you’ll make $50.o1 for that sale.
One of the great things about affiliate marketing is that there are so many different ways to promote each product. I’ll never think of them all, nor would I be able to do them all on one single website. However, with an affiliate program, you guys and gals will come up with new ways to market the product and reach new audiences that I’d have never thought of or reached otherwise. I’ll run down the few quick ideas I do have in hopes that they inspire you:
Since we’re trying to kick this affiliate program off with a bang, what better way to do that than with a contest? For every affiliate sale you generate for the month of February, you’ll be given one entry into the contest. At the end of the month, I’ll draw one name randomly from the list of entries and the winner will receive:
That’s a total of $235 in free stuff for one lucky affiliate. So, if you’d like to win a chance at that prize package, and make some money along the way, sign up for the Blogging Experiment Theme affiliate program now!
Please Note: You Cannot Purchase The Theme Via Your Own Affiliate Link Just To Get A Discount…

1Cool, Ejunkie looks like a good service, Leo Babauta used them for his Zen to Done ebook and they just took out an ad on my blog. I’m going to be plugging your theme Ben
Would be better if the payout was 50% tho :p

3Hmmm, very interesting service, but it seems like you’re pushing all these money making techniques in at the last minute Ben. I know you have 140+ days to meet your goal, but doing so much at once might push people away…

4@ Mike,
I’m sure Ben works on things as they come about.
It’s not planned to do it all at the end or the last 140 days…
But what is it about this that would push people away?

5@ Mike, what do you mean? We’ve been selling the theme for almost two months now.
And um, this is kind of a make money online blog…

6Sounds interesting and will be testing out your theme - my primary concern - other than visual appeal - is clean code and SEO-friendliness….
Off to check it out and then will be purchasin’ / affiliatin’.
I like it a lot thus far - based on your site.

7Awesome tool to make some extra money promoting your theme. I may put a post of this on my site and see if I get paid too.

8I’m almost convince Ben, but what are those figures
“33.34% of the sales price ($25.005)”
33.34? Is that some kind of odd rounding to a third? And, what’s with the $0.005?
“$50.o1″ ? Obviously just a typo

9@ David,
Maybe he’s just going a little crazy… it’s hard to tell.
Maybe he is expecting to sell so many that he is working on volume ideas, like gas. When you buy gas you pay 2.989 per gallon.

10@ David, E-Junkie makes you pick a percentage of the sales price. I wanted to give you at least $25.00 for a sale but 33$ was just under. So, I got it as close to $25.00 as I could by going with 33.34%.

112.989 per gallon. That’s the dollar price in the States at the moment, right? We’re paying well over a pound per litre in the UK - almost three times as much in fact! Much of that is tax.

12@Ben That’s fine
Picking people up on their use of too many significant figures is just one of my little hobbies…

13@ David,
I’ll leave you Brits to your high gas prices. It costs enough around here to fill up my truck thank you very much.

It looks an awful lot like yours.

16@ HMTK, yeah he purchased the theme. He actually got reviewed on JohnChow and some of the commentators over there were looking out for me as well. Honestly though, I don’t mind people removing the link at the bottom once they’ve purchased it. Personally I’d probably change it over to an affiliate link and try to sell a few themes but that’s just me

22Ben,
Will the e-junkie link that directs to your sales page still credit the referrer? Has it been tested and verified?
I want to verify before I put any kind of big push on to sell it.

23Bill, it’s all been tested and verified. When the ejunkie link redirects to the sales page, and that person purchases, you’ll receive credit for their purchase. Also, you’ll get an email from e-junkie notifying you of the sale you generated. It’s a pretty slick and easy system.

24Ben - In the future, could you please make sure to post about your experience offering an affiliate program. There are a million voices out right now sharing the experience working as an affiliate, but not such great insight into the challenges (and benefits) of offering up such a program.
Good luck with the theme sales.

25Affiliate marketing can be really good if properly done. For example, I don’t see Aaron Wall promoting any longer his eBook, people do it for him now since they know the product is good and is going to sell (and bring them revenue). Just as a picture of how good the affiliate can be.

26Interesting.
Unfortunately, like I said earlier, this will spread out until the demand is muck. And by then, you had better have found a way to make more money with the BloxEx.
Also, how are you getting these themes to sell?
Tim
February 12th, 2008 at 7:24 pm
27@Eric,
Why so negative. Should you not make money where you can simply because the revenue won’t last forever?
Most any job (company) relies on contracts that are not sure sources of income for ever. They are awarded for a specific period of time, or for a specific project to be completed. Then that income source is gone and you have to make sure you have another lined up.
I don’t think that there are many things in this blog (or any business) that are certain. Advertisers sometimes don’t renew their commitments, reviews are not certain to come in at a certain rate, etc. etc. etc.
What did you have in mind really?
Eric Vernon

28Well I relate the sales to a logistic growth curve - eventually, almost everyone interested in paying $75 for a theme will have bought it.
Now I’m not saying that affiliate sales aren’t a bad thing. They just speed up the process, while taking away some of the profits.
It could also work for Ben, don’t get me wrong. Who knows how many people are out there looking for a theme to buy. Who knows what this might do for his visibility - if in the sales pitch, someone says, “Featured on the BlogEx”, well then that’s a step towards earning more from reviews and ads.
I’m not trying to be cynical here, it’s just that I would heavily weigh my options (which I’m sure Ben did) before giving away 1/3 my profit and $235 in “gift cards” towards advertisements here.

29@ Eric,
But, the whole idea behind the affiliate sales is to reach people you wouldn’t otherwise reach. So are you really losing a third or simply gaining 2/3?
Eric Vernon
February 14th, 2008 at 9:24 am
30Well, that’s a decision each webmaster has to reach on his own. And, I suppose, Ben chose this one.
