Man, maybe I should turn “Wow, what a week” into a regular feature on this blog lol. Usually the posts for each day are written or at least laid out the night before. However, last night was almost entire spent watching Digg.com waiting pretty impatiently for the Blog Redesign story to hit the front page. Not only was I craving the traffic, I was more than a bit worried about how the server would stand up. I’ve had several stories hit the front page of the popular social site before, however, it’s always been a bit of a crap shoot whether the server will handle it. After the last time the Digg hoard brought my site down I vowed to upgrade servers and actually did in fact. Unfortunately it’s a pain in the neck to use and I’ve ended up back on the same server as before. Luckily, when the story did finally make it to the front page at 2:00 am local time, the server handled it like a champ. There were a few reports of the site going down but I was never unable to access the site and thousands of others got here just fine. Unfortunately, that late night vigil left me without a post for today and too exhausted to drum one up. So, you’ll have to settle for the things to look for in the next week.
Once the traffic surge from last night/this morning’s Digg has died down, I’ll analyze it for you and hopefully give you some pointers on how to replicate the success, should you decide it’s worth the loss of sleep.
The best man in my wedding is having a wedding of his own tomorrow! Since turnabout’s fair play, he’s tapped me to the best man which I’m told is just a temporary title. That’s pretty much going to take up the bulk of my weekend but he’s found himself a great woman (who obviously has no idea what she’s getting herself into) and I couldn’t be happier for him. In honor of the impending nuptials, and as I mentioned since I didn’t prepare a post for today, I’m going to be republishing the slightly embellished, and I’m told somewhat humorous, story of the first fight my wife and I ever had. Look for that later this afternoon and, consequently for me on the couch later tonight.
I’ve already received three great questions for Monday’s Reader Question Session and none of them will be short answers so I might have to shelve a couple for later weeks. Either that or I’ll make the unprecedented move and extend the session an extra couple of days.
And last, but certainly not least, I highly suggest getting Monday’s Wall Street Journal.
Have a great weekend everyone!

1[…] As I mentioned previously, this post was originally written while my wife and I were dating. If you’re wondering why you’re reading this instead of a post about how to make money blogging, you probably need to go back and read the post from earlier today. […]

2Congrats on 239 readers! Amazing!
Another question for the pile o’ questions:
I have the social bookmarking buttons on the bottom of my posts. They’re there in plain sight for everyone to see, love, and submit to. However, even when something is submitted, it rarely makes the top page. In my real-life, regular role, I am a principal in a software development company that has its own blog. One of our articles did get some Reddit love once because someone saw it and voluntarily submitted it (before we got the social bookmarking icons), but that was a one-time strike of magical goodness. So, my question is this: how do you actually get Digg/Reddit/Stumbleupon love? I have the buttons. I have done a couple of submissions. I have yet to cross that magical threshold of tons of traffic love. What’s the secret?
Enjoy the wedding and the subscriber base.
