Posted by Ben Cook as Blogging
A couple of days ago as I read through my RSS feeds, I came across a post about ExoClick on JohnChow.com that really surprised me. You see, it was actually about a way for bloggers to make money. It was then that it struck me, JohnChow.com, the much talked about website of a dot com mogul has in fact jumped the shark. For any of you who are unfamiliar with the phrase, jumptheshark.com defines it as “A moment. A defining moment when you know that your favorite television program (or in this case blog) has reached its peak. That instant that you know from now on… it’s all downhill.”
I realize John’s RSS numbers are at an all time high and he seems to have more and more loyal readers that hang on his every word. Unfortunately, the quality is just no longer there. I’m not sure whether John hasn’t been putting in the effort, opting to rest on his laurels, or whether he has just blogged himself out but either way, the posts have been less than helpful lately. Don’t get me wrong, no blog should be 100% business, and you simply can’t argue with the success John has had, but the signal to noise ratio has gotten out of hand.
Look for yourself! Looking back through the last 40 posts on the site, only a handful (I found 5 in a quick scan) have been about ways to monetize your site. For a site titled “make money online with John Chow dot Com” I’m expecting a hell of a lot more. If I expand my search to include posts about blogging in general that takes the count up to around 10. The rest are all either off topic (about cars or food), posts bragging about his success, reviews, or posts pissing and moaning about Google and Technorati being so unfair to poor old John (who, by the way, openly engages in schemes to trick both sites mentioned). Basically, 3 out of every 4 posts on the site are a waste of time.
To make matters worse, most of the useful posts lately have come from the guest bloggers! I certainly have nothing against guest blogging or sites that allow guest posts, however, when you build your blog around your personal success, your readers are going to be looking for suggestions and advice from you. I personally enjoy Michael Kwan’s posts (in fact I’m subscribed to his blog), but from what I can gather, he’s not made a bunch of money online and certainly not as much as John has. Along the same lines, neither have the 13 year old, nor the cow (If you haven’t yet been to this site, stop reading right now and go. I don’t mind.) that John has had post for him recently. Really though, if it weren’t for those posts, there would have been hardly ANY posts about blogging OR making money online. Bottom line, when a parody site based around cows is more entertaining and much more informative than your site, something is wrong. In the spirit of the new bovine phenomenon, it’s a sign that JohnChow.com has jumped not only the shark, but the mooooon as well (sorry, I had to…).
Fortunately, blogs, unlike TV shows, can easily be saved. If John get’s back into his groove and spends some time cranking out more content like the stuff he shared towards the beginning of the blog (note, this is also the content that led to his success) it will once again be a site worth reading. Unfortunately, I’ve seen no indication things are headed in that direction.

1I agree with you and its too bad, especially because I only started reading his blog a couple of months ago. At first most of the information was about making money online and blogging, but recently a lot of it just seems to be other stuff, which is not what I am looking for in a make money online blog. Hopefully hes just in a little slump and will be able to pull through soon.

2Web, I’ve been reading his blog for a while now and the difference is night and day, especially recently. I realize he’s busy and apparently (from his income numbers) can sit back and milk it now without putting much more effort in, but it is disappointing that he’s done so. I’m hoping it’s been a subconscious thing or maybe he’s just extra busy this past month but I’m not holding my breath.
Plus, this sense of entitlement has really gotten old. I mean seriously, having his readers email Google because he’s EARNED a serious penalty and somehow suggesting Google looks foolish by not listing him was just completely ignorant and juvenile IMO.
John if you’re reading this, please return to your roots. How much of your comment over the last two months would make it into an ebook on making money? Not much unfortunately.

3Well he did it again, with his latest post being about a restaurant (which is what the post before it was about too)!
One thing I am also noticing is that with his blog idolizes him more, while other bloggers like problogger include his readers and treat them more as equals (there was actually a post about this somewhere, which really made this idea apparent in me too).
John is still a smart guy and he has lots to offer, lets just hope he starts to give us what we want.

4Webd,
That’s actually what prompted me to create this site. So many people reading John’s blog view him as some sort of internet god. However, if I can pull off this whole blogging thing, anyone can. I guess we’ll see one way or the other in another 351 days but I promise you one thing, succeed or fail, I’ll always involve my readers and treat you as an equal.

6Yeah, it hasn’t gotten much better, although yesterday (or was it today?) there was a post about AzoogleAds. It was an affiliate offer but I don’t have a problem with those and it was at least about making money online.
It’s sad that those are now the exceptions rather than the rule.

7Although I initially disagreed with you a little bit on John’s post about avoiding income tax, you’re right. I’m tired of hearing about how many Agloco subscribers he has, and he seems to brag every time he hits another 1,000 sign-ups or every 100 RSS readers. We really don’t care.
I understand the occasional (10,000 sign-ups) or whatever, but he’s supposed to be telling us *how* to get that same success, not just telling us that he has it.

8Egon, that’s exactly what I mean. The tax posts wouldn’t be too bad if they were a once in a while thing but my goodness, he’s not posted anything even remotely related to online marketing or making money online in a long time. He replied to one of my comments saying that he’d get back in the swing of things soon and I hope he does. I’m just not holding my breath on it.

11Maybe he’s heard us? His last two posts have been about his monthly income and his top earners (both posts that interest me)! Let’s hope this trend continues.

12Well, I don’t know whether John heard us or started spending more time on the blog lately or what but I’ve been enjoying the posts a lot more recently. His “From Nobody to Somebody” project is going to be a great read when it’s done and is very similar to what I’m trying to do here it sounds like.
