Well I can hardly believe it but it’s that time of the month again. It’s February 1st and while I hadn’t had much time to work on this post before today, mother nature cooperated and dumped about 8 inches of snow on the area, giving me the day off work. Anyway, if you recall the goal for this month’s income was set at $1,500. That would represent a 50% increase from December when the blog brought in just over one thousand dollars. Also, with only 6 months left to reach my goal of $5,000 a month from the blog, I needed to start making serious strides towards that total. So how did I do?
Alright, let’s jump right in. Here is the income BloggingExperiment.com generated for January, broken out by source. Just like last time, I’ve put the previous month’s earnings in parentheses so we can easily see where gains and losses were made.
ScratchBack: $130 ($26)
Private Advertising: $310 ($510)
Sponsored Reviews: $621 ($100)
Theme Sales: $1050 ($375)
______________
Total: $2111 ($1011)
That’s right ladies and gents, not only did I meet my goal of $1,500, I blew it out of the water! The total of $2,111 more than doubled last month’s income and puts me just $400 short of being half way to my goal. Needless to say, I’m pretty excited about it.
For the first time since the Blogging Experiment began, I spent a decent chunk of change promoting the site. I purchased a stripe ad at the top of JohnChow.com for $250 and linked it to the theme sales page. Then I laid out another $250 to have BloggingExperiment.com featured in the Problogger Community Consulting project. Not only did I receive a LOT of great feedback about the site, it also drew a lot of attention to the fact that the Blogging Experiment theme is for sale. We received more than enough orders on the first day of the Consulting project to pay for the price of the review. As you can see from the Theme Sales totals, both sources paid for themselves with ease.
Despite easily hitting my goal for the month, I’m going to be a bit conservative when setting the goal for February. Sales of the theme made up about half of the income for the site. I’ve often discussed why it’s never good to have too many of your income eggs in one source basket and I think I’m getting quite close to that position with the theme sales. Also, a large chunk of the income from Sponsored Reviews came from one single review. While there are good and bad aspects of that (which I’ll discuss in a post next week), it might not be something I can duplicate moving forward. And last but not least, February is a shorter month as well, which gives me less time to generate income.
However, RSS subscriptions are continuing to climb, as are my rankings in the search engines. I have two new advertising options set to come online this month, and we’re working on two major developments involving the theme (one of which could help you make money). Also, with my new relaxed posting schedule, I have a couple of guest posting gigs lined up on a couple popular blogs. I’m hoping all of this will combine to allow me to hit $2,500 this month, despite the concerns I mentioned above.

2@ Tim, yes but that is still two days less that I can make money. That’s like 6 or 7% less time!

4Hey Ben,
Congradualations on exceeding your financial goals. I would like to follow in your footsteps in actaully 11 months to be able to attend school full-time.
Seeing that I don’t have SEO, design experience, do you think your efforts are duplicatable?

5Very cool. I’ve been following your experiment for a while now. It’s interesting to see what tools you’re using to generate income. I still can’t decide what tools I’d like to use. I’ve got a couple affiliate deals up right now, but deciding on things like text ads, adsense, sponsored reviews, etc. Still not sure.

6Ben, did you tracked the sales of the theme and which one proved to convert better?

7@ SEO blog, as I discussed in this post, I didn’t set it up well in terms of tracking. The ad on John’s site sent far more visitors but as far as I can tell they converted into about the same number of sales. The Problogger review brought sales in a bunch and the ones from JohnChow.com were spread out over the course of the month. Either way, I’d definitely do both again (and plan on it, in JohnChow.com’s case).

9Nice to see how far you’ve come! Imagine that, being a full time blogger.
You are rightfully worried about most of your money coming from theme sales - and rightfully so. Eventually you’ll have exhausted your target audience. In the mean time, however, that might be what you go off of while you wait for your blog to gain reputation.

10Congrats on a very successful month. It sounds like you have been working a variety of strategies for revenue…very smart.
I have been wondering, since you report your monthly goals and revenue as gross income, is your 12 month goal to be making $5000 a month BEFORE expenses? This is still not bad if expenses are only $500-$1000 a month, but I have been wondering.

11Interesting to see that half of the money came from selling themes and “only” $300 from private ads. When looking at John Chow’s report, the biggest money comes from private ads, affiliate comissions and ReviewMe.
Anyway, doubling your income in one month sounds very good!

13Hi Ben - Congratulations. I love to see people beat their targets. I am thinking of trying the blogging experiment theme on my own site, so maybe I’ll contribute to some of next months revenue.

14Great Job Ben, I have been watching your blog for sometime and I can only hope to have the same success. I agree with you, those numbers are outstanding but sooner or later the blog theme will die down and you will need another source of income. I would really try to promote this month in private ad commissions if I were you.
By the way, after the 153 days are up, what do you plan to do if you reach your goal? And if you don’t?

15Hi Ben,
Thanks for sharing about your January success! I will have what you are having in about 6mths time. Anyway I bought your theme and I really like it a lot. I heard that you are going to add some tutorials to teach how modify and make it customize to individuals?
Hear from you.

16Congrats on surpassing your monthly goal, Ben!
You mentioned that you looked for outside advertising for the first time from JohnChow.com and ProBlogger…Can you give me an idea of the traffic increase to your site that this caused? I may wish to try some advertising in the furture.
Keep up the good work. I look forward to seeing if you make February’s goal.

17Hey, great job! I’ve been following this site for a while, and it’s really helped me increase my site’s revenue. Keep up the great work, and I’m really glad everything is working out for you. It’s nice to see that “it can be done,” so to speak.

18Congrats Ben, that investment into ProBlogger and John Chow sure did pay off in theme sales. If you still have 153 days left to make a full income, I’m sure you’ll make your goal no problem. Good luck this month.

23Looks like spending $500, got you over $1,000, which is still a gain
I’m not sure, but are you going to add affiliates to the sales of your theme? I don’t want to assume things, but I think that’s what you’re going to do for the viewers to make some money.

29Great achievements there Ben! Do you not consider what would happen if you invested 75% of your income back into advertising? If you keep converting at 200% ROI you’ll get rich a lot quicker (providing you can live off of the money left over after advertising)

30Ben,
I know you used YPN for a minute on this blog, but why haven’t you ever tried adsense? I’d be curious to see a split test between an adsense block and maybe an affiliate ad run in the same spot. You could very easily add an adsense block into your theme at the end of a post to try to bump your earnings up a bit. Just a thought.

32Sites like Sponsored Review are looking more and more attractive now that PayPerPost has finally collapsed in popularity with bloggers.
Have you looked at other forms like setting up BANS sites or the likes?

36Ben, I see that Jim (Comment #10) has already raised part of the question I wanted to ask. It appears you are reporting your income as gross, but in the previous month you did have expenses. I was wondering whether you plan to offer net figures, and like Jim, was wondering if you will consider that you have reached your goal if your gross reaches $5,000 per month, despite paying out a significant chunk in costs.
The point being, of course, that if you gross $5,000, but expenses are $3,000, that remaining $2,000 is note exactly a very livable wage.
Anyway, I enjoy reading your blog and the ideas you present. It has certainly gotten me thinking.
