That’s right, I’m hoping you, my faithful readers, can help me lose…. weight. You see, I’ve agreed to participate in a group charity project called SEOs Fight Fat. The news wasn’t supposed to get out until tomorrow when the contest officially starts but since someone else already spilled the beans, I figure it’s ok for me to post on it as well.
The concept is pretty basic. A group of SEO’s (including myself, SEObook’s Aaron Wall, Jim Boykin, and of course DazzlinDonna and others) have gotten together and have been divided up into male and female divisions. Whoever loses the most weight (as a percentage) from each group will face off in the final contest to be voted on by readers. The winner will have all the sponsorship money donated to the charity of their choice. Google has already agreed to be one of the sponsors and we’re working on adding more as we speak.
So, here’s what I need from you. First and foremost, if you’d like to be a sponsor or donate to the cause, please visit this page and check out all the details. The money is never going to touch our hands, it will all go directly to the winning charity. I’m playing on behalf of the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile Program which is as worthy as causes go.
The other thing I could use is some suggestions on good ways to lose weight. I’m not talking hundreds of pound here but I could definitely stand to drop 30 or so. It wasn’t that long ago that I could eat a Big Mac value meal with an extra Big Mac and not be any worse for the wear. However, over the past few years I’ve been less and less active while maintaining most of my unhealthy eating habits. You don’t have to be a doctor to figure out that’s not going to work well. So obviously the first order of business is to get some exercise. However, I’m a pretty competitive person and I’d really like to win this contest, so if any of you have any programs or ideas that will help me lose weight (in a healthy fashion) either leave a comment or drop me a line via the contact form.
Anyway, the first official weigh in is tomorrow morning (I guess I’d better go buy that scale huh?) and you’ll be able to track my progress through my blog over on SEOsFightFat.com. Wish me luck and don’t forget to give me some suggestions on programs or plans or whatever to help me lose!

1I’ve lost 20-30 lbs in the last 6 months or so, with little or no exercise. I’ve cut way back on processed foods, starting cooking for myself more and cut out regular soda. It really was that simple.
Of course now I’m starting to plateau, so exercise is in my future…

2Ben,
I’ve been getting healthy recipes from a site called realage.com They appear to be affiliated with the doctors that wrote the bestseller, “You on a Diet”. They contend that one should pay more attention to waist size, than to weight because that mid-belly weight creates problems by crowding out organs and impeding their healthy function. (Basically, if you lose weight, you’ll lose waist size as well, so I think it’s just a different way to obtain the same goal.) They also have exercise routines that require no purchase of equipment or joining a gym (although I can’t say I’ve tried any of them yet). They also recommend finding an online buddy to help encourage you. You’ve got several hundred here alone, but might consider a more one-on-one approach there. The toughest part is eating out less…MUCH less because there are so few healthy alternatives. I think it’s a terrific goal that can only be a win-win for all involved. Best of luck! I applaud you and your SEO group!

3My personal philosophy is don’t eat when you’re not hungry. Also just remember to keep a balanced diet. Watch out when you’re bored because often people eat just because they are - next time you’re sitting at the computer and go up for a snack, think… do you _really_ need that snack?
I wish I could be more help, but I’m not a nutrition expert or anything - and I personally haven’t struggled with my weight, but none the less I’m here to support you.
Good luck!

4For me, it’s three P’s: Portion control, planning, and positive reinforcement.
Portion control is obvious. Eat slower, stop sooner, but don’t let yourself go around hungry all the time either.
Planning: Have lots of good food choices in the house. When the cupboards get bare, that’s when you start making bad decisions because it’s easy and quick. Plan ahead when you know you’re likely to be faced with temptation.
Positive reinforcement works better for me than looking at fat pictures of myself. That just makes me depressed. Surround yourself with positive images, thoughts, and goals. Reward yourself for reaching intermediate goals. Try to enjoy the process by remembering that you’re doing a very important thing for your overall health and well-being!
Hope it goes well for you! I’ll be watching to see your progress.

6I have lost 14 lbs in the last 3 weeks and have blogged about it at my site. I have pretty much been doing low carb, high protien. Four rules…so check them out they are pretty simple, and the weight comes off very fast (at first) then you will go to a steady pace! For a brief summary it is no white flour products, no drinking calories, keep it simple and take one day off per week!
Best of luck to you!

7I did the Colon Cleanising Kit at the beginning of the year. After 12 days in Australia on holidays i was ready for a good detox … you WILL lose weight if you do the 8 day intense program … but it’s pretty tough.

I do a detox once a year, i do it to improve my sleeping and to put a line in the sand and have a good 10 to 15 days total clean living.

8Eat less exercise more? It might sound blatant, even tho eating less will (yes) help you lose weight but it will also weaken you up. When I wanted to lose weight there was one simple method I used (and now I forgot using it again lol). This is what I was doing.
Waking up in the morning, push-ups and simple exercises for like 20 mins (rather then for losing weight, it was more for making the start of the day more elastic and drawing a smile upon my face). Of course, logging to your computer (but before eating, we know we are addicted and we know that sitting after eating does no good). Eat, then go out for a run (even 10 mins a day works out) or even better, play basketball (or something you really enjoy at and you are missing doing for a long time).
But on a second thought, reading what I just wrote is not what you really need, isn’t it right?
How about, tell us how do you plan to organize your “losing weight” days?

12Here are a few steps to slimming down and becoming healthier.
1) Cut the sugar. Soda, snacks, etc
Give yourself a small food reward when you hit certain goals. Depriving yourself of what you crave will lead to a binge which will put you back farther than the reward would have.
2) Cut the processed foods. Cookies, crackers, chips. Pretty much anything that comes in a box or bag that is ready to eat.
3) Increase fiber and protein intake. Both will keep you feeling fuller longer.
4) Cook at home more
5) If you eat out, take home leftovers and don’t finish your plate.
6) Keep healthy snacks around. Fruit, Pretzels, carrot sticks, etc
7) Exercise. For shear calorie loss cardio is the winner. You also need to include some weight training though. Lean muscle mass increases your capacity to burn calories.
9) Don’t forget to eat breakfast!
Those are some of my tips! Good luck!!!

14Actually the eat less concept is not very effective. If your body feels starved it stores fat and destroys muscle. If you want to count on the scales as the highest weight loss then yes, anorexia is the way to go. If you want to stay healthy and acheive a healthy balanced weight then portion control, healthy choices, and regular exercise is the only way to go.
Unfortunately, weight loss is a slow process. The slower it comes off the longer it stays off. Lose weight quick, stack back on double in half the time.

15You need to watch the quality of food you take, you can eat the same quantity if you control the quality of the food, like decrease sugar and fatty food while increasing vegetables like in salad…. etc.
Wish you good luck.

16I lost 2 stones last year. There is only one way to lose weight - eat well and exercise properly. Okay its slightly more complicated than that but there are a few things you can boil it down to:
1) Make sure your exercise program includes weight training - you dont want to be losing muscle, only fat!
2) In addition to the weight training, do some kind of cardio as often as you can, preferably every day. If boring running machines etc dont float your boat try a sport like squash etc instead.
3) Eat little and often, ideally 4-5 small meals a day. Make each meal balanced - protein, complex carbs and some fat.
4) Drink lots of water
5) Cheat as much as you need to in order to keep you on it for as long as you need!
Good luck

19I don’t really have a weight problem I guess but as I get older I am noticing what i eat is seeming to “stick” to me a little more. The best thing I did when trying to lose weight is of course regular vigorous exercise. I mean cardio and weights, and to top it off, i joined Weight Watchers. The program is not expensive and you eat whatever you want meaning you don’t have to buy special food. It’s just that you log how much of each thing you eat and you have to stay within a point total for each day. It really works, I lost 17 pounds with these two items, the exercise and the weight watchers, and i did it in about 5 weeks, maybe a little longer, it’s been 3 years since then and I need to do the plan again. I never stuck with my good eating habits that i learned, and I quit exercising so all the weight came back. Good luck on your conquest!
