Happy New Years once again to everyone. Can you believe that it’s actually 2008? Not only that, but in a few days time there will only be 6 months left in the Blogging Experiment? Wow…
Anyway, even though it’s New Years Day, it is also the first of the month and that means it’s time for an income report. If you remember, last month was a bit of an off month for me. I had set a goal of making $1,000 from the blog and only came in at $556. While that was still a decent month, it wasn’t anywhere close to my goal so I decided to once again try for the $1k mark, and set that as my goal for December. How did I end up doing?
Here is December’s income, broken down by source. I’ve included last month’s figures in parenthesis for easy reference.
Private Ad Sales - $510 ($245)
Theme Sales - $375 ($0)
Sponsored Reviews - $100 ($266.50)
ScratchBack - $26 ($0)
___________________
Total: $1011 ($556)
That’s right, I nearly doubled my income from last month and made my goal with $11 to spare!
In a month when you hit your goal you might think there weren’t any negatives. Unfortunately, you’d be wrong.
While $510 from the sale of private ads would seem like a major positive, that number is a bit deceiving. Don’t get me wrong, selling out the available 125×125 ad spots like we did in December is a great thing. However, $240 of the $510 came from a one-time ad buy that will be very tough to replicate. So, if I hope to continue my climb towards my $5,000 per month goal, I’m going to have to figure out a way to replace that income going forward.
Another negative this month was the drop in income for Sponsored Reviews. As I said last month, I think this is due in large part to my lack of Google PageRank. I am going to spend some time this month trying to remedy that, however, I’m not going to hold my breath.
And finally, you may have noticed the absence of Affiliate Sales on this list. That’s because, for the first time in several months, I didn’t make a single dollar as an affiliate. This is definitely an area I’ve been neglecting (to my own detriment) but it is also one of potential growth and might help me offset some of the one time income I mentioned above.
The most obvious positive this month was the $375 in theme sales. I first put the theme up for sale on the 7th but quickly ran into a bit of a road block. After getting all of that sorted out, we were back in action and sold 5 copies of the theme over the course of the month (with another order coming in today, just a few hours too late to be counted in this income report). Even though the theme was for sale most of the month, I’m VERY pleased with these totals because I really didn’t do much promotion for it, other than the posts on this blog. I think this is an area for potentially a lot of growth and something I’ll be spending a bit more time on this month.
Also, the introduction of Scratchback onto the site I think will prove to be a steady source of income for the future. We already have one advertiser (thanks Big Sky Blog!), and as the site continues to grow in popularity, I think it will begin to fill up fairly quickly.
As I mentioned at the beginning of this post, we’re closing in on the half way point of this experiment. While it’s a great feeling to finally hit 4 figures in income for a month, I’m only a fifth of the way to the goal. With that in mind, I’m going to set the target for January at $1,500. I’m going to re-focus a bit on affiliate offers, and will begin to spend some time and money marketing the theme sales as well. I’m also considering introducing a couple of new monetization methods, but those will be posts of their own.

1Isn’t Affiliate Sales completely different from blogging though? It would really be a dream come true to earn $5,000/month from pure blogging and the blog’s ad sales. This is what I thought you would do when I first visited this blog, but I guess not. Of course making money from all over is good, but if I were you, I would just focus on “blogging” if you know what I mean.

2I think the money that you made from the theme sale is pretty significant. If you can make $400 a month that seems like it would be well worth your time.
I don’t really agree with Mike’s comment above. I think you certainly can focus on blogging and still build some affiliate revenue at the same time without compromising anything. Good luck.

3Steven, I’d agree with you. The theme sale income was exactly what I had hoped for.
As for affiliate sales, Mike, really that’s just the same as ad sales. For example, if I write a post profiling a good service that I use, and they also have an affiliate program, then it’s informative and generates income.
I believe Shoemoney’s blog does a great job of this. He will mention a service or a product with an affiliate link and it generates income from then on. It’s one of the major ways bloggers make money and thus, something that I think should be covered here.
I do appreciate the input though. As I have said before, I really enjoy these types of discussions.

4Congratulations on your increased revenue. I”m enjoying watching your progress. You would have probably made a lot more if it wasn’t for the PR set back Google gave all of us.

5Congrats on the December progress!
Question: Any progress on tweaking the WP theme to include other colors? I’ve considered the theme for a blog idea I have, but would like to see it in a couple other color choices (earth tones, purple, red, etc.).
I look forward to following your progress in 2008.

6@ Emma, thanks for the kind words!
@ Coryan,
The theme colors can be changed fairly easily although we are also going to be releasing variations on the theme as well. I think next up will be green and blue with a couple of changes to the format as well. I’ll talk to the designer about taking custom color orders but he’s out of town for a week or so.

7Congratulations on making the goal and your successes - you’re doing great! I’m impressed with the theme sales especially. If you can promote it more, you can make plenty of more money and that can be a steady source of income for you. Keep up the great work, and happy 2008.

8I am one of those “theme” buyers and I have started to customize the color scheme somewhat but I am far from done.
So far all I have done is tweaked a few things here and there…I changed the RSS to blue, put a divider line above each post title so the posts dont run together, changed the fonts and added some dashed lines under the widget titles.
I expect to change it up some more in the near term future but not so much as I like it for the most part right out of the box.
As for the rest of the thread….I definitely woudn’t give up on the Affiliate income….if you build the right kind of sites you can build them and forget them and have a passive income.
You sure can’t do that from blogging….guarantee that.

9TBE, first of all thanks for your business!
As for the comment about affiliate income, you’re exactly right. The passive nature can’t be beat.

10Hi Ben,
Congratulations on your up and rising income from your blog.
Just a suggestion, maybe it would also be holistic to include expenditure into the income report? And probably the time you spend on maintaining the blog as well.

11@ Blog Contest Central, I will include any expenditures but so far, there haven’t been many. As I said when I got the custom theme created, that would probably cost several hundred dollars, however, I have access to a talented designer (my pops). I have spent some on a few of the prizes I’ve given out but it’s been fairly minimal. I will try to keep track of my expenses a bit more this month as I plan on doing more promotion and advertising, namely for the theme sales.
As far as time goes, I really have no idea. You know it might be interesting for me to keep a time log for a month or so. Thanks for your input!

12Congrats for reaching $1000. Nice idea though, that of selling a theme. Maybe I’ll hire a designer, get a theme designed and either give it away to build backlinks or get extra money. Seriously though, you should get some affiliate offers and promote them. For example there are offers for cheap business cards. Why don’t you join AzoogleAds or NeverBlueAds? They have some nice affiliate offers…Also, you can get a Money Makers page and promote all the products you see to make money. You can also promote their small icons in the sidebar…

13Ruchir, I’m already a member of Azoogle and a couple of other affiliate programs. I just haven’t spent much time integrating them into this blog yet. It’s definitely an area with potential.

14Hi Ben,
I like what you’re doing here and I have 1 suggestion that would increase your income…
You need a way for your potential advertisers and clients to contact you.
I like your theme here and I bought it but have not heard anything from anyone since. I may also buy some ongoing ads but I have no way to get in touch.
I could do a WHOIS and look you up but it is far better to just click a link to go to a contact us form, email or phone number.
Just a thought…

16Charles, a couple other people have mentioned the same suggestion. I’m working on getting a contact form up. I do have contact details on the About page but that’s definitely not enough.
If you’d like to contact me, feel free to drop me a line at blogex[at]bloggingexperiment.com any time.

18Ben, there is a Contact Form Plugin available that creates a decent looking contact form as a separate page. You can see it on my blog and I can send it to you if you like. It works great.

20Congratulations on the improvement. Hope 2008 will bring more fortune to all of us. Me too like to increase on the affiliate things. I believe that is the best sources of income. But need to figure out how really that affiliate marketing works. What I know if we use the products ourself first usually we can sell it better. and ya your blog look kind of simple but cool.

21Hi Ben,
a time log would be perfect. It would at least let you know how much you are getting in return for the time spend on your blog. On my end, I’m spending way too much time on my contest blog, but I enjoy blogging.
But I do have to make time for family as well, and thus I guess I have to slow down an be more selecctive on my post.
