In mid-2008 I stumbled across Theme Forest for the first time while searching for the best wordpress themes. At first I wasn’t that impressed, but I remember not spending very much time investigating just what this “Theme Forest” was. We all know there are a never ending supply of free and premium WordPress Themes online today, and at first glance this seemed to be just another choice in the virtually endless sources of WordPress wares. Thankfully, on closer examination, I realized that ThemeForest had not only addressed several of the major problems those of us face when “searching” for Premium WordPress Themes, they had done it in a very unique and inviting way. Well fast forward almost 4 years, and let me tell you about the Theme Forest of 2012.

Theme Forest In 2012

Theme Forest is a marketplace in the Envato network that is specifically for WordPress Themes and HTML Templates. If you’ve ever found yourself wondering just where you could find high quality premium WordPress themes or website templates, Theme Forest was created just for you.

The Dilemma

As a blogger your focus should be on content. Blog design is important, but when you think about it, do people go to Craigslist because it looks pretty? Absolutely not. They use it because they’re the best in the field.

Since we’re not all Craigslists, we must merge the design and content aspects together in as seamless a manner as possible. You want to have a nice looking design, but you most likely are not strong in design itself (much less coding that pretty design). You want a unique, impressive look that conveys professionalism and passion about your craft, but you’re probably not an expert at usability (how “usuable” your site is to visitors). We are all familiar with the myriad of hosting companies out there, many of which cater specifically to WordPress given it’s meteoric rise in popularity over the past few years.

I have no problem with their Theme Club model as our favorite pick in WordPress Themes also happens to be  WordPress Theme Club, the problem is that I have a sneaking suspicion that they don’t have just 3 accounts left – and I don’t know about you – but in the day and age we live in now, these scarcity tactics just leave a sour taste in my mouth.

They do have an interesting product offering though (full disclosure, we are NOT affiliated with them nor do we receive compensation from them in any way). On their checkout page you will see that their membership includes things like:

Over 600+ WordPress Themes and website Templates

Updates as long as your yearly membership is active

Over 2000+ vector images and icons you can use

Stock logos for use on your site

When you take a look at all they offer you (which we haven’t fully covered here), you start to think that $60 isn’t a bad price at all! Let’s see what other customers have to say about TemplateSold.com once they purchase.

After reading though reviews such as this and this about TemplateSold.com one is left with the feeling that they try to overwhelm you with a lot of cool “stuff” but the stuff itself is poorly coded, poorly managed, and their money-back guarantee all but non-existent.

Even more confusing, I can’t make any sense of how they can pay developers up to 85% of the theme sales when they offer a bundled membership that includes every file they have for $60. It would be like ThemeForest letting their developers sell their themes individually for $30 – $40 of which the developer gets 50-75% or sell every theme on the marketplace for $60 of which the developer would get…what???

As is often the case, when things seem to good to be true they just about always are. TemplateSold.com seems to have some nice WordPress Themes listed on their site, but their business tactics and reputation seem to point another direction. I’d like to use something other than my recent posts as my home page. Is that possible within WordPress?

Note: This has been tested to work in WordPress 3.0 and above.

It’s not only possible it’s relatively easy. The first step is to create a page to serve as your new home page. For the purpose of this example, we’ll call it “My New Home Page.”

1. In your WP control panel, select the Pages tab.
2. Click on Add New.
3. Give the page a title, “My New Home Page.”
4. Create the content for your home page just as you would a blog post.
5. Click the Publish button.

While you’re still in the Write Page subpanel, create a second page:

1. Title this one “Recent Posts” (or whatever you want to call the page that your recent posts will appear on).
2. You don’t need to have any Page Content for this one.
3. Click the Publish button.

Now you’re ready tell WP to use your new page as the home page:

1. In the Settings panel on the left navigation select Reading.
2. At the top of the Reading Options subpanel you’ll see:
3. To change the front page to your new home page, select “A static page” for Front page displays.
4. Select “My New Home Page” from the Front page drop down menu.
5. Finally, be sure to tell WP which page to use to display your recent posts. From the Posts page menu select the “Recent Posts” page you created earlier.
6. Click Save Changes.

View your site. “My New Home Page” should now be your home page.

Note: Any Page Content you have entered for the page you designate as your Posts Page will be overwritten by the listing of your recent posts.

Modifying your Pages menu

If your theme is set to display a list of your pages, the list should now contain links to both My New Home Page and Recent Posts. In the case of the Blogging Experiment Theme, this causes a bit of a problem since our menu is designed to display a “Home” link along with the page links.

Here’s the code from our old menubar.php theme file:

To remove the (now redundant) Home link, simply delete:

There’s one more problem, right now our page links are in alphabetical order. Fortunately the sort_column parameter of the wp_list_pages function in our code is set to menu_order. That means we can adjust the menu order by editing the Page Order setting for our pages:

1. Locate the page you want to change the Page Order setting for in the Manage>Pages subpanel and click Edit
2. The Page Order setting is at the bottom of the right-hand column.
3. If necessary click the + icon to expand the edit box and reveal the Page Order text box.
4. Type a number into the Page Order text box. For our example we’ll order the pages:
   1. My New Home Page
   2. Recent Posts
   3. About

Pages with lower Page Order appear first in the menu. Pages with the same Page Order are sorted alphabetically. Our menu should now look like this:

By default, newly created pages have a Page Order of zero which will put them at the front of your menu if you forget to change it.

So now is the time when overly zealous corporate suits come in an wreck the whole thing by trying to fix what isn’t broken, right? Not so much…let’s take a look at what Facebook’s Send Button is and then how you can add it to WordPress.

What Is Facebook’s Send button?

Put simply, the Facebook Send button allows you to share a page or piece of content from the web to not only your Facebook friends but also to anyone with a email adress. Whereas the Like button allows you to share something with all of your friends, the Send button allows things to be a little more intiment: between you and a certain number of your friends or even right to someone’s email inbox.

How Do I Add The Send Button To WordPress?

You can either add the Send button by itself, or you can combine it with the Like button. One interesting thing to point out is that whenever someone “sends” your content to somebody else, it count’s as a “like.” For those worried about losing the social benefit from having someone like your page, you can rest assured that each and every send will count towards the like count for that page.

IMPORTANT: You can NOT currently use the iFrame code from Facebook to display the Send button. It won’t work. For the Send button to work on your site or with WordPress in general, you will need to use the XFBML code.

Option 1: Send Button With Like Button

If you want to add the Send Button to your WordPress posts, simply navigate to single.php in your WordPress dashboard, and place the following code somewhere in your loop (some themes may require doing this to loop.php).

Option 2: Send Button Only

Matt Cutts can’t stand it when webmasters DON’T take full advantage of ALL the features WordPress affords its users.

HE HATES IT!

But don’t worry…He did recently share several tips and strategies for maximizing your WordPress site’s presence on Google so you can take full advantage of all that WordPress has to offer.

I’m going to outline them for you here (and I’d like to point out that I started this article by using one of Matt’s tips for successful blogging: create a controversy – more on that a little later).

First off, did you know that Google looks at over 200 characteristics when ranking sites? Most of us get caught up in the big three: keyword density, inbound links, and pagerank – when in reality there are many other features Google takes into account when ranking sites.

Throughout this article we will briefly cover just a few of the topics that Cutts touched on when speaking about WordPress a few months back.

Permalinks Matter

We all know the standard link structure for a fresh WordPress install where the end of your pages look something like this in your browser: http://mysite.com/?p=123. Matt contends that this is a complete waste of an opportunity to use relevant keywords.

Since keyword density in your title tag, meta description, and body are so important, it lends us to believe (and confirmed by Matt) that actually adding the keyword to your URL so that instead your site reads: http://mysite.com/my-keyword-article-here will be much more beneficial than NOT having it listed there. Again, so much of what ranking well online is about is doing more than the next guy, and surprisingly enough, many people don’t take advantage of the permalink settings in WordPress.

Thankfully, this is an easy fix. Go to Settings > Permalinks and do the following:

Use Different Verb Tenses In Title & URL

Instead of putting your article titled Setting WordPress Homepage at the link: http://mysite.com/setting-wordpress-homepage consider changing the verb tense for the link to: http://mysite.com/set-wordpress-homepage.

Notice the use of the word SET in place of SETTING. This shows Google something I’m sure they are already smart enough to figure out, but YOU are taking the initiative in doing it which is an important point to remember in SEO.

This is not a game of sit back and wait, it’s a game of take charge and go. It’s a guarantee that some potential visitors will use a different verb tense when searching Google, and this way you show Google your interested in THAT keyword as well. It’s a small change, but small adds up.

Use Good Keywords As Categories

Again, don’t waste an opportunity to TELL Google what you are trying to rank for by giving your category some obscure names.

Also, keep in mind that dashes are best (my-keyword), underscores are second best (my_keyword), and no spaces is the worst (mykeyword).

If I’ve messed up and not used dashes or even underscores, should I go back and reformat each post?

Matt emphatically replies…

“No. Focus on creating better content. The search engines do a relatively good job of doing separators.”

For the last half of this article, I’d simply like to share some important quotes from Matt Cutts’ discussion on WordPress, and where appropriate, share some of my own thoughts and feedback.

MATT: “Find something you’re passionate about, write often, pay attention to the mechanics, and don’t overdo it.

MATT: “Start in a small niche then build up, build up, build up, build up.”

Matt then went on to reference Katamari. I assume the takeaway is that here was a game developed with a relatively small budget by gaming standards that went on to achieve huge success and spawn the creation of subsequent games because they focused on simple fundamentals not hype, cutting edge graphics, etc (things that other game developers probably thought were MUST HAVES).

We all know how that line of reasoning can carry over to the web. In the end it always comes back to quality over quantity.

MATT: “If someone tells you there’s a shortcut and you can be the number 1 gadget blogger in 3 days and you can beat engadget and gizmodo, laugh in their face and send them packing because it doesn’t work that way. If you want to be the best gadget blogger, start off by writing about a particular type of phone.

Matt goes on to say…

Provide a useful service, do original research, give great information, find a creative niche, write some code, live blogging, make lists, create controversy.

If I had to sum up what it takes to become a successful web entrepreneur or blogger that last quote would be it.

Matt touched on so many of the characteristics of those who are successful online in that one little sentence. Read it, then re-read it, then read it one more time!

MATT CUTTS ON VIDEO: While discussing another topic, Matt slid this comment in that I thought was important to share: “Videos tend to rank really well on Google.” Take that as you may, but it comes straight from the horses’ mouth.

MATT CUTTS ON ADSENSE: Matt shared the following code for Adsense users.

He went on to say that, “This will target Adsense ads to the meat of your posts. Ads will be more relevant to your visitors. You’ll get more clicks, and you’ll make more money.”

MATT CUTTS ON ERROR PAGES: Google.com/webmasters will show you the 404s on your site. If you notice a link coming from a reputable source, email them and ask them to update the link to the correct page (and you now have another link you didn’t have before or you THOUGHT you had before)

MATT CUTTS ON WORDPRESS HACKS: To protect your /wp-admin folder, Matt shared the following code. I will caution you that I am not a doctor and this should not be taken as serious medical advice. Seek a professional’s opinion.

He said to add a .htaccess file in /wp-admin and insert the following:

AuthGroupFile /dev/null
AuthName "Access Control"
AuthType Basic
<LIMIT GET>
order deny,allow
deny from all
# whitelist ohm IP address
allow from 123.45.67.89
# whitelist work IP address
allow from 123.45.67.98
</LIMIT>

Remember that you have to change the allow IP address to your IP and one major point of caution is that if your IP changes this could potentially create a problem. Done correctly, this makes it so that only YOU can access your /wp-admin folder.

So there you have it…a little bit of controversy mixed in with what I hope was helpful information that you can act on today to get your WordPress site ranking better on Google.
