Very informative post. I would like to see you get into more detail about content Web sites for niche markets. I would argue that content Web sites in hot, yet under exploited, niches could reap some great rewards in half or a quarter of the time.

Hi Max, I was just reading through this post again (before I started part II) and had a question on the content website earning potential.

“A solid content site with 10,000 visitors per month in a moderately competitive niche market should be making approximately $1,000 – $2,500 per month.”

What are the monetization strategies you would use to produce $1,000 – $2,500 per month? I know your favorite is to sell a product, but is that the only method you would use?

i stuck with option 1) for two years and yeah the first 12 months are tough, i was chuffed if i got a comment on a post. Now its more like 20-30 comments on each post and a good amount of visits too

I hate to say it, but coming from an ecommerce background, you are 100% correct. Which is why my ecommerce site has been on the back burner so long. I considered making it affiliate products only and adsense, but that has yet to materialize.

I’m trying for #1 and it’s a struggle. I’m on my fifth blog and this one is really clicking. The real reason I blog is not for money, but knowledge and to gain a reputation. Hopefully I can parley it into a speaking and writing career.

I’m convinced that blogs are great tools to reach people directly, receive great feedback and improve skills. If money comes with it then cool, if not make sure plan B and C are legit.

About a year ago I was interested in setting up a store based on the dropshipping model. Indeed, at first glance everything seemed perfect. Only after days of research I dropped the idea because of the reason you describe.

Too bad I didn’t find an article like this back then. Would have saved me lots of time.

I love your straightforward/no B.S./opinionated writing style. This is excellent stuff so far-subscribed and looking forward to part two.

I am going to move away from blogs as a way of MMO. I am NOT against blogs and blogging, in fact, blogs are what got pulled me online and I love to read them. But to make money, I’m turning to ecommerce, already set up two accounts at the wholesale level and will be doing my own shipping and storing. Like you, I will be packaging the items (enhanced by my own quirky creativity) to appeal to a specific segment of the population.

I can’t compete with amazon.com but I’m not trying to either. I’m excited about this venture and I thank God that I saved $10K over two years to get started, it’s not much but will certainly help.
