AMAZING post!! I really have to agree with you with the membership site. The more I get exposed to online business I do see the most successful people having membership sites and building mailing lists.

That’s exactly right Caroline! You’ve discovered the secret. If you want to take is a step further, try not to write any of your own content if you can avoid it. If you can outsource the content creation from the start, then when you sell the business it’s even easier. You can find more buyers for your website if you don’t have to look for buyers who know your topic already. The new owner can just keep paying the person you were paying to continue to make content.

Don’t you just love it when you read just one line that transforms your thinking… I have been thinking about doing a membership site ever since the end of October when I signed up for Teaching Sells but the thing that held me back was figuring out how to create content “forever”. You’ve just answered that question for me – I don’t need to! If I can come up with content for say one year, I can build up the membership site and then sell it when I start running out of content. Hopefully the new owner would then be able to inject his own ideas into it.

Can you give examples of interesting, solo-run membership sites. I was a member of Salon for a while but any other paying memberships I have involve something more than content (BackPack apps, Zune music sub, etc.

How can you get people to subscribe to a *content*-based site (or maybe that’s the wrong approach).

@ Jason – For someone brand new to IM and wanting to go part time, I would recommend promoting products as an affiliate. Like you said, membership sites can be time consuming and hard work. It depends on how much money you want to make really. The more time/effort you put in, the more money you make.

@ Ben – Great, glad to hear you are moving on to a membership site. Let me know if you have any questions as you get along.

@ King Myron – We’ll see. If this is what people want to learn about, then I can talk about it more. This website was designed to teach people how ot make money online, so I’m not sure changing the focus entirely to how to built a membership site is a good idea.
