Seems like everyone likes to see income reports on blogs, so I figured I’d amuse you and share my April results. April was our first full month of ownership since taking over BloggingExperiment.com on March 27th. I didn’t post a March income report since there were lots of things in transition between the ownership change…
I’ve made several changes to this blog in the short month or so that we’ve owned it. You can be the judge if buying this website and making the changes was a good or bad idea.
First, I removed all paid advertising from the site. Since advertising was making up a small percentage of income, and sponsored reviews are a waste of everyone’s time, it was a simple decision. I’ll be bringing back an advertising option in the next month or two, but it will not be sponsored reviews or 125 ads.
Second, I made some layout changes by making the header section of the site smaller and added an opt-in form for people to download a free report I wrote. I also removed the feedburner subscriber counter (those things are nothing more than an ego boost, so a waste of prime screen space - the current count is 1,287 for those who are interested). Finally I shifted up the prime content to make the site more user friendly and valuable to readers.
Here’s a look at April’s income. I’ve included the figures from February in the parentheses for easy comparison.
Scratch Back: $0.00 ($130)
Private Advertising: $0 ($210)
Sponsored Reviews: $0 ($100)
Affiliate Sales: $871 ($91)
Theme Sales: $750 ($1,425)
Buy & Sell Websites Training Class: $3,400 ($0)
________________________
Total: $5,021 ($1,826)
The expenses have changed slightly from February since I didn’t renew the John Chow advertisement.
Advertising: $0 ($250)
Affiliate Payments: $25 ($100.00)
Contest Payments: $25 ($0.00)
________________________
Total: $50 ($350)
So, when all is said and done, I had profit of $4,971 this month which is $3,495 more than February’s income.
Overall, I’m pretty pleased with the results so far. If the income remains the same as April, this website purchase will have paid for itself within 4 months, which is a pretty good return on investment. This website acquisition is following the same pattern as most of our buying and selling websites projects we’ve taken on. The first buying and selling websites training class is well underway as we speak and I’m sharing the exact steps anyone can use to achieve results just like we are getting on the BloggingExperiment.
If you missed out on the class, shame on you : -)
You’ll have to wait until the next class opens up if you want to learn the exact steps I’m taking to turn this $1,500/month blog into a $10,000/month business.
My goal is to hit the $6,000 profit mark next month, and I think that will be easily achievable at the current growth rate. Traffic is up about 20% since we bought the site and May is an extra day longer than April. I’ll be opening up the second buying and selling websites training class somewhere around the end of May, and since the second class will be $400 instead of the discounted $200 as mentioned here, reaching the $6k mark is not unreasonable.
Also, I’ll be testing a new advertising model hopefully starting in May if my programmer can get the software written by then. I have high hopes for this software program I’m having built, which will allow website owners and bloggers to sell advertising more easily. I’ll be testing the software on this site before releasing it to others.
Hopefully you can follow what I’m doing on this site and you can implement these ideas in your own business. Creating your own products are critical to your success online. Between my training class and this new software program, I have no doubt this website will be responsible for making $10,000 per month in profit within 3-4 months. We’ll have to wait and see I guess…

1Wow, that is insane! I am particularly impressed with the affliate sales. The training classes income, whilst nice for you, isn’t something most people can be inspired by as we aren’t experts in anything as saleable. But even without that you still beat February’s profit despite removing pretty much everything.
Originally I thought that buying this blog would be a mistake, but clearly I was very wrong!

2Very interesting to read the income report from this blog with the new owner. I imagine most of the affiliate sales came from the post about the BANS store, and I’m fairly surprised how high the level of theme sales is still!

3That’s a very nice income there Max! This should help fuel the popularity fire for the next intake of the B&SW course.
P.S. Loving the course so far

5@ Phil - EVERYONE knows something of value that they can sell. If you don’t personally, I bet someone you know does (neighbor, relative, etc). Once you get out of that mindset, great things will happen for you…
@ Clog - About 30% came from Bans referrals, another 40% came from Hostgator and about 30% came from Atomic Blogging. Theme sales dropped a bit, probably because I didn’t renew the ad on JohnChow.com
@ Jason - Glad you are enjoying the class so far!
@ Brett - Great, if you want me to cover anything specific, let me know…

6Max, great job on the successful takeover. If your taking ideas for topics to cover I would love to read a series on creating blog revenue through affiliate programs. It seems that selling advertising may be declining and for a blog without tremendous traffic (yet) private ads doesn’t seem like the right place to focus efforts. I am in the sport niche and am trying to focus my money making effort on affiliate programs. It would be good to get your take on where to start, how to choose profitable programs, how to market them etc.

8@ Dannie - To make money with affiliate programs, you have to promote GOOD products. Don’t promote things because they have high commissions, but rather because you’ve used the products and can stand behind them 100%. I just had someone email me saying they took my advice on the niche store software and they are already up to $15 per day in profit. That doesn’t surprise me because I know it was a good product, which is why I recommended it.
Case studies /demos are the best way to sell things. Think Home Shopping Network where the hosts show off the products they are selling. I’ll try to cover some more affiliate stuff in the near future…

9Impressive numbers Max and obviously a testament to forward planning. You obviously have a very clear vision of where you want to take this blog and you are reaping its rewards, but as a knock on affect so are we - some great content here, keep it up.

10Its amazing what someone elses expereience, perception and forward thinking approach can do for a business.
Did Ben have any future plans or goals for the site, or was he satisfied with what he had accomplished? He has done some good work here.
The information just keeps getting better. There is nothing better than reading content that gets to the point and stays focused throughout the article. You always give the readers something to look forward to.
Hey Max, I really appreciate everything you have done so far.

11Hey Max,
It’s refreshing to see a site like this that actually divulges their financials! Not to mention informative.
Buying and selling websites is a whole avenue I haven’t yet looked into, but I think I may!
Thank you.

12Congratulations Max. You’re already doing 200x better than Ben did by focusing on content more than advertisements. I liked his content too, but your articles are more in-depth and the readers don’t have to worry about articles for reviews or affiliate programs. That is probably why you’re gaining more visitors too

p.s. So you bought this blog for about $25-30,000?

14Great results Max!
You are also showing us a blueprint for taking over blogs and rapidly gaining quit your day job income. Or a way to transform our blogs via a planned approach to profit rather than the prolific blog writing plus Ads approach.

15Ben was still able to do alright with his way of doing things and a lot of bloggers would be happy making what Ben was bringing in. Max was able to generate a large chunk of his earnings through the class which most wouldn’t be able to do anyways.

16@ Terry - I agree that many people would be happy with the income Ben was making. I disagree that most people couldn’t do what I did. EVERYONE has SOMETHING they can sell, some kind of specialized knowledge. If not directly, then they know someone such as a neighbor, friend, relative, etc that can help put together a product.
You can substitute “buy & sell website training class” with anything to replicate exactly what I’ve done. This is the exact pattern we’ve taken for our last 5 projects and it has never failed. I could have just as easily created a “how to setup wordpress for SEO class” or “how to sell more advertising on your blog class” or “how to get tons of traffic to a blog class”, etc.

17Very impressive numbers Max. Congratulations! I hope to participate in round two of your course b/c I ran into a financial snag. Looks like this website for a good investment after all, and I’m sure you’ll hit your goals for next month. Keep up the good work!

19@Max - Yeah, perhaps you’re right. Everyone has knowledge about something they could possibly turn that into some sort of class. It could even be totally unrelated to making money online.

20Mike,
If you multiply 5000 by 4 you get 20,000 which would mean he paid not more than 20K for the site… not the 25 to 30 you came up with.

21@Terry Tay, if your blog is about making money online, any course or product you come up needs to be at least somewhat related to that topic otherwise your readers won’t be interested.
However, if you’re an expert on something else, consider starting a blog on that topic with a goal to monetize it via a course or information product.

22Very interesting post.
You seem to be looking to earn money with this blog by selling people products rather than reviews and advertising. Very interesting way of doing it.

25Hmmm…
Its very interesting that you eliminated all the advertising because the return was minimal and reduced the size of your header! It gives me something to think about.
Thanks for the great ideas!
